Two men's pairs took part in the heats of the Championship Pairs with Alan Sinclair and Andy Holmes qualifying for the final by winning the fastest heat of the day whilst brothers Chris and Jonny Logan just missed qualification in their heat by the narrowest of margins. In Sunday's final, the Sinclair/Holmes pair had a fierce battle all the way down the 2000 metre course with a Canadian crew from Mendota RC but had to settle for second place a mere 1.58 seconds behind the winning crew.

In the Championship Single Sculls event, Holmes qualified for the final from second place in his heat whilst Sinclair just missed qualification by a narrow margin. Home International Regatta: A full copy of results and times for last weekends regatta are now up on the Irish Rowing website. Apologies are sent from the SR Team Management for the lack of report at present. The Team Manager left the post race celebrations at 5am to catch a flight from Cork and onwards to Toronto. He was there before the Scottish Team bus got to Strathclyde Park well after 9pm! It came to light over the weekend that Jamie Steele, who was in the stroke seat of the winning ASRA based Junior women's coxless four to victory put up an unusual record. She has been in the Scottish Junior Team for NINE successive years. Her first time was as cox of an ASRA JM 4+ which won when she was nine years old.

Commonwealth Regatta: Four gold medals for Scotland on day 1 of the Commonwealth Rowing Championships in Ontario, Canada. Wins in ML1x (J Logan), M2- (A Holmes, A Sinclair), ML2- sprint (J Logan, C Logan), M2x (A Holmes, A Sinclair). There were lots of other good performances, especially relation to the other home nations.

Inverness Sprints: Please note that there is an error in Inverness sprint poster - entries should be emailed to entries@invernessrowingclub.org.uk (not entries@invernessrowingclub.co.uk as originally advised). Also, due to popular demand, the organisers have added mixed R2 2x and mixed Vet 2x to the events list. Entries for the sprint close on Friday at 6pm.

Contributions for the Scottish Rowing Newsletter No 6: Roy Sinclair would like to invite contributions for the 6th issue of the Scottish Rowing Newsletter and would be grateful if you or your club scribe could provide an article suitable for inclusion in this issue. All contributions, plus any appropriate photographs, will be most appreciated. Submission of details and pics to Roy no later than Thursday 12th August please.

Missing sculls: Does anyone know the whereabouts of a pair of Strathclyde Park RC sculls which went to HIR and did not return? They are Concept 2 Smoothies with black sleeves, a sticker with the letter 'D' on the front of the inboard loom and white adhesive tape on the outboard loom 20cm and 40cm from the blade. There is a superficially similar set at Clydesdale, but with no letter, no tape and the blades do not seem to have been painted prior to Scotland colours being applied for the regatta. If you have the SPRC blades please contact Tom Hewitt on tom.hewitt(at)physics.org or on 07973 498066.

Record Scottish Presence On GB Rowing Teams: Press Release from Lee Boucher
Five Scottish athletes have been selected in the Junior and Under 23 Great Britain Rowing Teams which were announced this week ahead of upcoming World and European Championships in Belarus, Belgium and the Czech Republic. The World Under 23 Championships take place between the 22nd and 25th July in Brest, Belarus, with a record number of Scots involved across the team. Edinburgh University student Polly Swann is one of two home-based athletes in the team. Polly, who trains out of Glasgow Rowing Club under the coaching of George Warnock, will sit in the stroke seat of the coxless four. There is a seat in the lightweight quadruple scull for fellow Glasgow Rowing Club oarsman and Strathclyde University student, Sam Scrimgeour. Joining Swann and Scrimgeour in Belarus is 2009 Junior World Champion, Andrew Holmes. The Lochwinnoch man is currently training in England out of the world famous Leander Club in Henley-on-Thames and has made the step up to the Under 23 squad despite still only being 18-years-old.

Whilst for a third year in succession, a George Watson’s College pupil will be competing for medals at the World Junior Rowing Championships. This year Callum McBrierty, supported by the sportscotland institute of sport, has been rewarded for an excellent domestic season with a place in the lead Junior boat, the coxless four, which is heading to Racice in the Czech Republic from the 5th to the 8th August. Gavin Murty of Glasgow Schools Rowing Association and Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club has been selected for the boy’s sculling squad which is set to compete between the 30th July and the 1st August at the Coupe de la Jeunesse (European Junior Championships) in Hazewinkel, Belgium.

Scottish Rowing’s High Performance Co-Ordinator, Lee Boucher, was delighted with the news and was quick to congratulate both the athletes and their coaches on their respective selections. “It is extremely encouraging to see the number of Scottish athletes on Great Britain Rowing Teams rise yet again. The work that these athletes and their coaches put in on a daily basis is phenomenal and we must congratulate them for that. But knowing the type of people that we are dealing with, they will not be content with just a vest; they will all be striving to bring home medals from their respective Championships and we wish them all the very best.”

Inverness Hawco Sprints: Details of the subject event ( Poster + Entry forms ) may be obtained under Events on the IRC website.
