Pilot Workshop on ‘Disability Inclusiveness Training for Rowing’: Following on from discussions at the Club Conference on 21st January 2012, we would like to invite Coaches or other interested club representatives to attend a Pilot Workshop on ‘Disability Inclusiveness Training for Rowing’. The workshop will take place on Sunday 11th March 2012 at the Scottish Rowing Centre, Strathclyde Country Park. Level 2 Coaching Course: Scottish Rowing is proposing to run the next on the 24th/25th March & 31st March/1st April 2012. In addition to the two weekends there will be an additional evening so that the child protection elements of the course can be completed. Due to the need to register with British Rowing and 1st4Sport (the cross sport accreditation organisation), it is important that anyone wishing to take part on the course completes an application form and forwards it to Jo Ramsay by 15th February 2012 at the very latest. Each candidate will also need to sign up for Row How on the British Rowing website in order to access the course resources - the cost of this is £10. You will be required to reference your Row How registration number on your application form.

The course fee for the course will be £405 (£289 of which is the course fee levied by British Rowing) and this should be sent along with your application to Jo Ramsay at the Scottish Rowing Centre, 366 Hamilton Road, Motherwell ML1 3ED. Candidates from Scottish Rowing clubs who complete the course within 12 months will be eligible for a completion grant of at least £100 (exact amount to be confirmed). Candidates should also be aware that many local councils provide funding towards this qualification.

New Umpires: Congratulations to Jenny Chambers, Hazel Calder, Amy Watson and Adam Downie who have all passed their umpires exam.

River Clyde Debris: Glasgow Humane Society has managed to remove the debris from Polmadie Bridge which included three trees over 100 ft long. There is spasmodic debris still coming downriver so anyone boating as the current lessens (hopefully no more rain) will still have to be extremely vigilant and keep a good look out ahead.

Strathclyde Park Water Safety: New guidelines for water safety at Strathclyde Park have been published on the Governance page.

ES Rowing Services: Eric Sims will be running a trailer to pick up boats for repair during the Christmas/New Year period. If any clubs would like quotes, boats repaired or spares they can contact Eric on 07774980811, for spares ring the office on 01628 666255.

Aberdeen Xmas Eights Aberdeen Boat Club Christmas Eights 2011: Saturday 3rd December
Clydesdale Scullers Head - cancelled
Rutherford Head - cancelled
What to do?
Head to Aberdeen and enjoy the ABC Christmas Scratch Eights. This is an annual event where all names are put in a hat and then drawn into assorted "matching" crews and ten raced over 500m downstream with a tailwind and an outgoing tide. Fast conditions gave some of the novices a baptism by fire. The sun shone, fun was had by all. The Christmas trees were the eventual winners, after an exciting three boat final. A fun way to start the festive season for all the clubs in Aberdeen. Pics are available on www.cofd.co.uk.

Clydesdale Scullers Head Cancelled: After discussion with the Humane Society, the Tidal Weir staff and other parties, the rescheduled Scullers Head on Saturday has been cancelled. The river is not expected to calm down sufficiently; the debris on Polmadie Bridge is not likely to be removed in time; the floodwater debris expected over the next few days; and the forecast bad weather on Saturday present an unacceptable risk to the safety of competitors.

Brother John Ogilvie: Brother John Ogilvie, the Marist Brother who founded the rowing club of St. Mungo's Academy, has died after a short illness. Brother John Ogilvie was a dedicated member of his religious order, a fantastic teacher and an inspirational leader to the pupils whom he coaxed into our sport. He laid foundations that resulted in St Mungo's Academy becoming the top school and junior club in Scotland, in one year winning every event but one in the Scottish Schools Rowing Championships, that one event being the only one they didn't enter. He will be sadly missed.

His mortal remains will be received into St Peter's RC Church, Partick, Glasgow at 7.30 on Friday 2nd December and his requiem Mass will be celebrated there at 12 noon on Saturday 3 December.

River Clyde Newsflash: Message from the Glasgow Humane Society:
Please note that there has been a lot of debris came downriver with the latest flood. A tree about 100ft long has lodged across the north pier of the Polmadie footbridge and other rubbish is now piling up against it. This means that half of the north arch and half of the middle arch is blocked. The tree will not be able to be moved until the run is totally off the river. While this will be done as quickly as possible, it may take some time. So, even after the current has lessened sufficiently to allow boating again, great care will have to be taken regarding dislodged debris until all has been cleared

Scottish Indoor Rowing Champs: Details for the 2012 Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships on 29 January 2012 are now available on the Indoor Rowing page.

Clydesdale Scullers Head: The provisional draw for the Scullers Head is now on the Clydesdale website.

Explore Rowing Explore Rowing: Explore Rowing is on its way to Scotland as British Rowing and Scottish Rowing agree to promote fun and social rowing north and south of the border. This agreement, which initially runs until March 2013, means Scottish Rowing clubs can become Explore Rowing-accredited - allowing them access to Learn to Row courses and literature, Explore Rowing Handbooks and Workbooks, and the ongoing support of the Explore Rowing team.

'This is another example of the excellent collaboration between British Rowing and Scottish Rowing,' said Di Ellis, British Rowing Chairman. 'Both National Governing Bodies are pooling their resources for the greater good of the sport, and I'm sure we'll see many more people from both sides of the border enjoying the fantastic rowing opportunities Scotland has to offer as a consequence.'

'Scottish Rowing is very excited to be able to work with British Rowing in utilising their successful Explore Rowing project to help promote rowing in Scotland,' added Mike Morrice, President of Scottish Rowing. 'This agreement will provide our clubs with quality resources to make rowing more accessible to all.'

Explore Rowing aims to provide new rowers with a fun, friendly introduction to rowing, as well as providing existing rowers with exciting new tours and challenges. For more information on how your club can join the initiative, visit www.explorerowing.org.

This will take place at the Scottish Rowing Centre on 4th Dec from 13:30 - 15:30 at a cost of £6 and numbers will be limited to 12. Annual Scottish Rowing Safety Audit: At October's AGM the introduction of an annual, compulsory Safety Audit to be completed by all Scottish Rowing Member Clubs was approved. The deadline for return of the completed and signed Audit to Jo Ramsay is 1st January 2012. Clubs which fail to meet that deadline will be suspended from competitive activity until the completed Audit is received. Jo Ramsay emailed the file for the Audit Form to club contacts early in October. If any club secretaries did not receive that email it would be helpful if they could let Jo know.

Glasgow Fours Head - Provisional Draw: The provisional start lists for both divisions, instructions for competitors and other information are all on the race web site: www.glasgowrowingclub.org/Events/2011_4s_Head/. Please get in touch as soon as possible if you have any queries.

This session will take place in the hotel prior to the dinner. This is an informal 'drop-in' session, and dinners are free to come along anytime between 6.30 and 7.30pm. There is no additional cost for this opportunity to sample some of Scotland's finest whiskies. Tickets for the dinner can be ordered via the Booking Form link at the right hand side of this page.

: Scottish athletes who are intending to trial at any age group for Great Britain during the 2011/12 season are reminded to complete the online registration process in order to be eligible for support from Scottish Rowing during the current season. The deadline for registration has been extended to Monday 14th November and athletes should consult their coaches in the first instance, all of whom should have copies of the 'Guide to the Scottish Rowing Performance Programme 2011/12 - For Athletes and Coaches.' Scottish athletes who are based outside of Scotland should email Lee Boucher (lee.boucher@scottish-rowing.org.uk) directly to register their intention to trial and to receive a copy of the Guide.
