Boatshed at Strathclyde Park: As a result of housekeeping operations at Strathclyde Park the following items have been found in the Scottish Rowing storage area.
- Bicycles, owners unknowm, some in bits. Would the owners please reclaim these and remove them as soon as possible please? They will remain in the shed until the Half-Yearly Meeting on 7th March. Thereafter they will be parked outside in the Scottish Rowing trailer. If they remain unclaimed by Sunday 28th March they will be dumped. If anyone has a (very) good reason for keeping their bike at the Park, please share it with Tom Hewitt and identify your machine to him.
- A pair of Matt Wood sculling riggers. If unclaimed by the Half-Yearly, they too will be dumped.
- A number of new bow balls suitable for attachment to wooden boats which have more pointy bows than plastic boats and therefore require a different bow ball. Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships 2010: The final version of the event timetable for this Sunday's Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships is now available, as are two competitor lists (one listed alphabetically and one by ergo number). An updated event information document is also available with additional information for athletes competing in team events.
In addition to the 41 individual and team races, there will be word record attempt by Clydesdale ARC's Matthias Auer. Matthias will be out to retain the World Lightweight Marathon Record that he had previously held for over 4 years until surpassed by a Danish rower in December. He will began his challenge at 12:40 and his time to beat is 2hr32min7sec (That’s a 1:48.1/500m split!)
Scottish Rowing is also pleased to welcome a team from the Royal Navy submarine HMS Vanguard. Finding a location onboard to train can be difficult and they have often found themselves rowing between two nuclear missile tubes. They will be hoping to challenge Team Aegon, last year's winners of the men's Team Event. Results and commentary will be available throughout the day at twitter.com/ScotIndoorRow.

Scottish Island Three Peaks Race: Alan Rankin, a competitor in the Scottish Island Three peaks sailing and mountain running race is looking to acquire some rowing equipment. The race rules allow for rowing propulsion when the wind dies so he is planning to rig a frame to the yacht with a two sets of seat/slides, riggers and oars. Ideally a set of second hand gear that is past its competitive best would suit him. If you can help, please email alanrankin@btopenworld.com.

Young rowers benefit as Scottish Rowing comes on board with Scottish Area Institutes of Sport: Report from Lee Boucher.
Four of Scotland’s best young rowers have been inducted into the East and West of Scotland Institutes of Sport as the sportscotland institute of sport area network embraces rowing for the first time. This month, Callum McBrierty (Edinburgh), 17, along with Jack Leask (Heriot, Scottish Borders), 16, have both joined the East of Scotland Institute of Sport. Balfron’s Rosie Young, 18, and Chris Rae, 20, (Giffnock, Glasgow) have joined the West of Scotland Institute of Sport.
Established in 2001 and supporting over 400 athletes, the sportscotland institute of sport area network works with partners to build greater success for Scottish sport. Its expert teams work together to support Scottish governing body-identified athletes, delivering essential support services locally in sports medicine, sports science, strength and conditioning, and career and lifestyle guidance.
This development comes after a highly successful year for Scottish junior rowing. Lochwinnoch’s Andrew Holmes helped Great Britain’s Men’s Coxless Four win the gold medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships in France. Clydesdale’s Rosie Young and Callum McBrierty (George Watson’s College pupil) brought home four gold and one silver medal at the Coupe de la Jeunesse (European Junior Rowing Championships) in France. Meanwhile at the annual GB France under 16 match in Cardiff, Jack Leask (of George Heriot’s School and Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club) won two gold medals; in the single scull and the quadruple scull.
Said Katherine Grainger MBE, Great Britain’s most successful Olympic female rower and a sportscotland institute of sport supported athlete: "This is fantastic news that the rising stars of Scottish rowing will get a chance to work with the sportscotland institute of sport area network. Over the years I have worked alongside various institutes and they do a great job in bridging the gap between top level potential and world class standards of excellence. While the athlete needs to bring passion, commitment and talent to the enterprise, the institutes offer expertise, advice, experience and knowledge across many essential areas in sport. As a result athletes will get the opportunity to develop their training programmes, their training technique, their nutrition, their psychology along with lifestyle suggestions to balance the demands of elite sport and the reality of the real world. I would urge them to grab the opportunities they get with both hands and set themselves exciting new targets. It would be great to see more Scottish athletes competing in the British Rowing Team and hopefully this new partnership will be a key step in seeing that become a reality."
Said Lee Boucher, Scottish Rowing’s National High Performance Co-ordinator: "The success of our young rowers is testament to the year-on-year professionalism and dedication shown by both the athletes and their coaching teams. I am certain that there is much more to come from these and our other young rowers as Scottish Rowing integrates its performance programme with the sportscotland institute of sport area network. The quality provision of local support is central to Scottish Rowing’s vision moving forward and I am certain that this will have a massive impact on our athletes’ performance levels. With London 2012 on the horizon and role models such as sportscotland institute of sport athlete, Katherine Grainger, competing on the world stage, the future looks bright for rowing in Scotland."

Update to GB Trials posting: The trials have been cancelled due to severe weather warnings for the south-east of England.
Scottish Rowers Brave The Weather At GB Trials: Report from Lee Boucher.
Scotland’s top rowers are facing up to the prospect of sub-zero temperatures on Saturday when they compete at the GB Rowing Senior Team Winter Assessment in Boston, Lincolnshire. Eighteen Scottish athletes, including seven currently based in clubs and universities in England, are taking part in the long distance trial over the 5km course, as they strive towards selection for London 2012.
Leading the way is four times world champion and triple Olympic silver medallist, Aberdeen’s Katherine Grainger MBE, representing St Andrew Boat Club in the women’s single scull. Fresh from her successes in the summer, when she claimed a silver medal at the world championships in Poland in her debut season in the single scull, Katherine will be hoping to continue that good form into the current season. In the men’s coxless pair, 2009 junior world champion Andrew Holmes will be looking to make a smooth transition into the senior rowing world, when he teams up with Constantine Louloudis of Eton College, crewmate from their gold medal winning boat. The 18 year old Lochwinnoch youngster will face tough opposition in a division which features Olympic gold medallists Andrew Triggs Hodge and Peter Reed.
Six members of the Glasgow based GB Rowing Team Start Programme, coached by Ross Malone, venture south including Christopher Rae and Ross Irvine in the men’s single scull and Karen Bennett, Claire McKeown, Samantha Fowler and Rosie Young in the women’s single scull. Strathclyde Park’s Kelly Limond is hoping for a repeat of her result from the previous trial in October, when she won the women’s lightweight single scull division. The 29 year old physical education teacher from Glasgow faces 2009 world champion Sophie Hosking (born in Edinburgh) for the first time.
Training partners from Glasgow Rowing Club, students Sam Scrimgeour (Strathclyde University) and Iain Docwra (Heriot-Watt University) trial in the men’s lightweight single scull for athletes under 75kg. Both athletes are aspiring towards British selection for the world under 23 championships and will be looking to build on their strong performances from the October assessment, where they finished 9th and 10th respectively. Racing starts at 10:30am for the open weight boats and 13:30 for the lightweight classes.
