Castle Semple Regatta: The Draw, Circulation Pattern and Safety Notice for Saturday's regatta are now on-line. There is fantastic entry for this regatta, making it the largest one day event in Scotland - bigger than SPR or Scot Champs. As safety is paramount can all spectators PLEASE take note of the amended circulation pattern as we have had to add another lane to accommodate the large entry. Also due to the high entry can competitors please note that changes to race times will not be possible due to the high levels of clashes - unfortunately we could not account for coxing clashes. We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday - don't forget to bring your racing licence!

Missing blade: Lost, much loved Oarsport cleaver, purple spoon with white triangle on the end, one red stripe on the loom near the plastic handle. Sadly we don't know where or when, but would appreciate any information as his brothers and sisters are missing him! Contact Carol Wallace at Aberdeen Boat Club if you've seen him.

Edinburgh-Glasgow Boat Race prize giving Walter Scott and Partners Edinburgh vs Glasgow Boat Race: Our man on the scene reports that the Walter Scott and Partners Edinburgh vs Glasgow Boat race was staged in gloriously sunny conditions, as Glasgow Green was besieged with picnicing rowing fans (as well as some curious locals). Top honours were shared between the east-west rivals, with Edinburgh winning the womens race and Glasgow taking the mens. The rest of the day saw local victories in both reserve races and the womens Graduate contest, with the visitors claiming the Novice ergo challenge and the Graduate mens sprint.

Rules of Racing: At recent regattas there have been a couple of issues which Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control, would bring to the attention of competitors.

  1. Before entering events, clubs and competitors must check their eligibility. Rule A14 requires Clubs to ensure that their entrants are properly qualified for the event i.e. are licenced, are the correct age and are the correct status. Anyone whose licence card does not say 'Novice' under 'Rowing' or 'Sculling' on the front of the card is NOT eligible to compete as a Novice in that discipline. Equally if their card has been punched under either discipline they are no longer able to race as a Novice in that discipline. A Club making a wrong entry may be fined a penalty fee. If in doubt ask.

  2. Rule C7 requires every competitor to wear the colours of the club that he/she represents. Some competitors consider this rule to be unimportant and that it can be ignored. Competitors should be in no doubt, compliance is essential to assist Umpires in controlling racing and crews should be aware that failure to conform may lead to disqualification.

Regatta Commentators – step up to the mike!: The regatta commentary team at Strathclyde Park is on the look out for new members. A clear voice, GSOH (plus tact!), and a broad knowledge of rowing and rowers are the only qualifications. Ideally, we seek people who have few other commitments at regattas (it’s difficult to work commentary round busy competing or umpiring schedules) and who would look forward to being long term members of the team. We cover SPR and Scottish Championships annually together with major events as they appear – inc Home International and Commonwealths this year, World Under 23s next year. Email Terry McNeill if you would like to volunteer – you could even do your first shift at Scot Champs on 10-11 June this year.

If anyone needs a single taken to Stampfli or Janousek from the Central Belt, Tom would be happy to take it for a share of the petrol costs (boats could also be collected from Strathclyde Park or the M74 services). Tom can be contacted by email or telephone 01698 458480 (home), 07973 498066 (mobile).

There have been some warnings about rowing club members driving at excessive speed and swerving around pedestrians. Discussions are currently underway with Glasgow City Council and the Park Rangers and outcomes will be posted on this page.
