A thank you from Dundee University BC: The Dundee UBC mixed Novice 8 who raced in Division 2 at the Clydesdale 4s and 8s Head would like to thank Clydesdale ARC and in particular Tom McGuinness for the loan of the VIII and blades which enabled our rowers to take part in their first ever race. Secondly, we would also like to thank the Strathclyde Uni BC rowers who helped us lift the boat down the stairs to the Clyde and back up again - all of these acts of kindness helped at at time when the crew were rather fraught and nervous.

The day started badly when the crew met - lacking minibus keys. 20 minutes late, the crew headed to Inchyra - to find that the trailer brakes had seized completely over the winter. Clutch brutality got the trailer out to the driveway where frantic hammering and WD40 application had no effect. By now an hour late, we headed for Glasgow (via Stirling) hoping to borrow equipment.

On (unexpected) arrival in Edinburgh, all confidence in the cox's ability to navigate was completely shot. Despite this, the crew remained optimistic and on arrival in Glasgow a full 90 minutes late, a brief conversation with Chalky from SABC linked us to Tom & loan of the 8. Thanks to all the above people, we finally made it to the start and had a brilliant race. The crew then returned to Dundee via most of Glasgow's East End (we got lost again) for a well-earned pint .. and are now looking forward to Aberdeen VIIIs head. If anyone knows where Aberdeen is, please let us know!

Do you recognise this club? Does anyone recognise this club? The SARA community has been tasked with helping to identify the club featured in this photograph. The rower at the bottom right of the photograph is RA Oliver, grandfather of Graham Oliver. Graham is hoping someone can help him find out which club his grandfather represented through this photograph (click on photo for a bigger image), which was taken sometime around 1906 - 1910, at the Union Canal in Edinburgh, where RA Oliver lived and studied.

club crest The crest appears to have 5 initials, ending in ARC, with a thistle emblem and crossed oars underneath.

Inverness RC visit Ireland: News from the IRC contingent who visited the Dublin Head of the River on the River Liffey last Saturday - two crews took part, providing an international aspect to the proceedings, both on and off the water. Cheered on by crowds on the walkways and bridge parapets of the riverside, the Inverness men's crew managed a fine third place in their event. The women's crew (with a few friends from SPRC and Sons of the Thames RC) also had a fine race to finish as the fastest crew in their event category. Both crews and their supporters took time to relax and refresh themselves after their exciting experience on the water and enjoyed the buzz of Dublin night life before travelling back to Inverness. Photographs of their trip can be seen on the IRC website.

Durham Head: Meanwhile in England, Edinburgh crews were enjoying some excellent (if rather chilly) conditions on the River Wear, while they negotiating the infamous Elvet Bridge. George Watsons College and George Heriots School picked up a number of wins - full results on the North-East Rowing website.

Eight for sale: An eight has come up for sale - see the Sales and Wants page for more information.

Women's Eights Head and Breast Cancer Haven: The Women's Eights Head of the River Race will again be supporting Breast Cancer Haven, a national charity supporting anyone affected by breast cancer, by asking all teams taking part in 2007 to raise funds for the charity.

Last year teams raised over £10,000, and this year we are hoping to smash that target. Many of the crews set up Just Giving websites at www.justgiving.com and got sponsorship from friends and families. Some of you held pink parties, raffles and competitions to raise your funds. There were many other fantastic ideas, and this year we are hoping you will feel even more inspired in creating ways to raise money.

You can download a fundraising pack by visiting www.breastcancerhaven.org.uk/events and selecting the Women's Eights heading. Alternatively email your address and they will send a pack out, or call Maggie Hitchins on 020 7384 0024 to discuss your idea. The best way to collect your funds is through Just Giving, which sends all donations directly to the charity, so set up your crews fundraising website now at www.justgiving.com.

Every team that raises over £30 will be entered into a prize draw with the chance of winning the star prize of a fantastic new Rowperfect Rowing Simulator, with a runner up prize of 8 Magik Oarlocks for your boat. If you want to turn your crew pink on the day we would love to see you all in pink hats, leggings or pins, but please remember not to obscure your club kit.

With 1 in 9 women being affected by breast cancer it is a cause close to so many people's hearts, and every penny you raise will make a difference to the lives of those affected. For more information on the charity please visit www.breastcancerhaven.org.uk.

Many thanks in advance for all your support and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kind Regards, Maggie Hitchins, Breast Cancer Haven.
