Henley Qualifying Races: Congratulations to Edinburgh University and Glasgow University Mens Eights, who have successfully qualified for the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta, which starts next Wednesday. Aberdeen Inter-Company Regatta: The 23rd staging of the annual Aberdeen Inter-Company Regatta, sponsored by Sparrows Offshore, will see 160 novice rowers representing 30 local employers battling it out over 76 races on the 500m course on the River Dee at Aberdeen Boat Club this Saturday. Until six weeks ago, none of these novices had ever sat in a rowing boat. Each mixed-sex crew has now had six training outings in a coxed four, coached by an experienced Aberdeen Boat Club member. Racing under crew names like ‘The Bibby Dazzlers’ (Bibby Offshore) and ‘Blood Sweat & Beers’ (Premier Oilfield Rentals), the crews are also getting into the swing of the less serious competitions on the day for the most imaginatively named and fancy-dressed teams.

Starting at 10.30am, the crews will first race each other in a round-robin contest, with the fastest crews progressing to the later knockout rounds. The final is scheduled to be raced at 5.30pm with the prize-giving at 6.00pm at Aberdeen Boat Club.

Aberdeen's three-times rowing World Champion and double Olympic silver medallist Katherine Grainger MBE will present the trophy and medals. Speaking ahead of the regatta, Katherine said: “I always enjoy coming home to present prizes at the Aberdeen Inter Company Regatta. It’s the biggest event of its kind in Britain, it provides a fitness challenge for the employees of the companies who enter, and it introduces 160 new people each year into the sport I love.”
