Use of Headphones and Radios: Further to the note on the News page a couple of days ago regarding the wearing of Headphones and the use of mp3 players in England, the Umpires Commission would interpret the SARA Rules of Racing as already covering this situation here. Rule F21 of the Rules states:
"F21. Crews shall be responsible for their own steering and the Umpire shall ensure that crews are not followed during the race by other racing boats, nor receive any advice or instructions. No radio shall be used in a boat during a race. A crew receiving any extraneous assistance may be disqualified."
The wearing of Headphones by competitors could be interpreted by Umpires under this clause as using a radio and receiving outside assistance thus potentially leading to disqualification when racing. Competitors should therefore refrain from their use. Sandy Walker, Umpires Commission

University Freshers’ Training Days: All information and the application form for this event which takes place on 20 and 21 October are attached.

ARA Rules on earphones: The following notice may be of interest to any Scottish rower who intends to compete or train south of the border:
The Rules of Racing Committee and the National Competition Committee, both decided that it was unsafe practice for any oarsman/woman to cover both ears with headphones particularly if attached to equipment such as an mp3 player and applies to competition as well as practice sessions. It is imperative that all rowers and coxswains (or steerers) can hear communication from the bank or launch at all times.

Junior Trialists, 6th October: Could any coach or athlete who is intending to attend the sessions on 6th October should make themselves known to Peter Barton in advance of the day by email. See 7th September for more information.

World Masters Results: The World Masters Regatta 2007 is underway in Zagreb, Croatia. Ailie Ord has sent a report of the results so far:

Hazel Smith (Inverness RC) and Ailie Ord (Strathclyde Park RC) have won in Womens D8, with crewmates from London clubs and finished second in Womens C2x. Hazel and Ailie then joined with Hazel Geddes, Susanne Hunter (Inverness) and Kevin Towey (Old Collegian's Boat Club, Ireland) to win Womens C4+ (and also finished second in W C4-).

Gordon Kerr (Nithsdale ARC) has won Mens F1x and finished second in Mens D2x with Steven Kerr (also Nithsdale). Faskally Coaching Weekend: Information and the booking form for the Loch Faskally weekend, 26th to 28th October, are now online.

SARA Training Day cancelled: Iain Somerside has sent a notice that there will be no training day on Sunday 9th September for potential international athletes and coaches. Details of a meeting for athletes and coaches will be posted on the website shortly.

Junior Trialists: Any Scottish junior athletes intending to submit themselves for GB trials and selection for the GB junior teams (Worlds, Coupe and GB-France) are invited to attend a session at Strathclyde Park on Saturday 6th October. Athletes should present themselves in single sculls and will be expected to boat at 9.30 with a finish time of 11.30. The work will be UT2 paddling of approximately 10 to 12 K. Scullers will be observed by Richard Boulton, High Performance Coach (Juniors/Under 23s) British International Rowing, from the umpiring catamaran. It is unlikely that there will be much direct coaching.

After this session all scullers will be expected to race in the Clydesdale Scullers HOR where their performance will also be observed by Richard. Between the park session and the head race, and again after the head, Richard will be available to discuss training loads, trial pathways and racing schedules for any athlete (and their coach) intent on GB pathway. Peter Barton and Iain Somerside will also be available to discuss SARA high performance path support to confirmed athletes and their coach.

Missing a coxed four?: There are 2 coxed fours in the George Watson's College compound which appeared there in early July unknown to the school. It would be greatly appreciated if they could be moved in the very near future or for the owners to come to some arrangement for their continued storage. Boat identifications are ABU and The Lord of the Rings. Please contact j.ferguson@gwc.org.uk

Sales and Wants: A couple of new sales and wants have been posted.

Clyde ARC Squad: Clyde ARC have sent a link to a promo video for their club - anyone who is interested can attend a squad meeting on Wednesday 19 September, 7pm at the Clyde boathouse.

World Champs: Katherine Grainger and the GB women's quad showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels in the Women's Quad final in Munich last weekend. The quad led from the start, opening up clear water over the rest of the boats, in a very authoritative performance.

Lake Endine Regatta: Elsewhere in Europe, Chris and Jonny Logan have been racing alongside two Italian lightweights, Massimo Sangrigoli and Guiseppe Cerea. At the Lake Endine Regatta, the four combined to race in heavyweight quads, where they won silver. They then split into two lightweight doubles, with Jonny and Massimo winning gold, closely followed by Chris and Guiseppe in silver medal position. Pictures from the event to follow.

Clydesdale Scullers Head: The entry information for the Clydesdale Scullers Head is now available in pdf and word format.
