National Schools Abandoned: Friday at the National Schools Regatta was a relatively calm, if rather damp, day. A number of Scots crew raced in J14 and J15 events, with three crews from ASRA, George Heriots School and Strathclyde Park reaching semi-finals but not progressing to finals.
On Saturday morning, the notorious Holme Pierrepont tail-wind began to pick up, and the time-trial racing began to be matter of surviving the course rather than racing for a time. Rolling waves higher than the sax-boards of many boats meant rowers were drenched by the finish line, with some barely making it to the pontoons before their boat succumbed to the water and others snapping blades in the conditions!
In the Schools 1st Eights event, there was great concern at the Grand Stand when first an Empacher 8 in lane 1 sank close to the 250m mark, and then a Resolute 8, further out in lane 2, went down bows first. The former were able to reach the bank and walk their boat back, those in the Resolute were forced to abandon their boat which had flipped over. All were plucked from the water while eights continued to race past them in various states of disarray. Special mention has to go to one crew, who despite having the majority of their boat underwater, continued to row to the finsh line, with their cox assisting by paddling as fast as he could. The time trial was stopped and the remaining crews, including one from George Watsons College, paddled home. In all, a reported four or five boats sank or were unrowable.
Racing was suspended until 2pm, and at 3pm an announcment was made that the National Schools Regatta for the rest of Saturday and all of Sunday was cancelled. Further information on the cancellation is on the NSR website.
Snapper Ron reports that unfortunately he missed out on the dramatic photo-opportunities at the National Schools Swimathon (or Regatta) at Holme Pierrpont. Mrs Snapper adds that, in the typical white horses and surfing conditions enjoyed at the big English pond, an Eight sank and was almost rowed over by another Eight before the organisers decided to abandon racing on Saturday. With an even worse weather forecast for Sunday, all racing has been abandoned for that day as well. Mrs S is abandoning the wilds of Nottingham to drive the Wee Nipper (youngest of the Snapper clan) back to the sunny and balmy environment of the North East of Scotland a day earlier than planned [many juniors headed straight back to Scotland on Saturday afternoon]. This will allow him to do even more studying (?) for his standard grade exam on Monday.
Photographs: Top - two doubles cross the finish line rather low in the water. Both were able to paddle to the pontoons.
Middle - an eight sinks around 200m from the finish line.
Bottom - under water, but still moving - this eight crossed the finish line to cheers from the bank, before sinking at the pontoons.

Club Colours: Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control, would like to remind competitors that the Rules of Racing (Rule C7) require competitors to wear their club colours at regattas. The reasons for this include enabling umpires to identify competitors and to present a good image of the sport. Umpires have a copy of the colours of the clubs who have registered them with me. Recent regattas have seen competitors wearing a ragbag of assorted colours when racing and competitors are reminded that disqualification is possible if they are not dressed appropriately. It is appreciated that there may be circumstances where the wearing of the registered club colours is not possible but where this is the case all crew members should be dressed in the same colours.

The regatta circulation pattern is on the CSRC website and all crews must familiarise themselves with that and with the regatta instructions sent to clubs. In the main events, Edinburgh University women were victorious, despite rudder problems, and Glasgow University held on to the Mens title. Overall results were therefore 4:2 to Glasgow.

They have also received a reminder within the last day or so that returns have to be with Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control by 31st May. This consultation is important and all clubs should endeavour to make a return. Racing Control consider that the views of competitors as well as regatta organisers are of equal value if not more so and will be pleased to receive returns from individuals who wish to make serious comment. However anonymous or unattributable returns will be ignored and will be destroyed without consideration. A copy of the questionaire should be available from club secretaries.
