Scots representing Great Britain: At the weekend a number of Scots were representing GB: Kirsty Myles (Oxford Brookes and formerly George Watsons College) won a Bronze medal in the Women's Coxless 4- at the World U23 Rowing Championships in Brandenburg in Germany;
Alistair Sarahs (George Watsons College) won Gold medals on both days at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Cork, Ireland, with partner Tom Edwards (Durham Schools BC); congratulations to both and to Jim Ferguson, their coach, who has had a major influence on both their rowing careers.
Also at the Coupe, Rosie Young (SPRC) won her spare WJ 2- race on Saturday. Due to an injury in the WJ 4- on Sunday, Rosie sat in the crew where she finished a creditable 4th in the "A" final.
Sean Dixon, also of George Watsons competes this weekend coming in Linz, Austria, at the Junior World Rowing Championships, stroking the Junior Men's coxed four.
Daniel Harte, formerly of George Heriot's School, will be racing in the GB Men's Lightweight Pair at the non-Olympic World Rowing Championships, also held in Linz, Austria, this weekend coming. Sophie Hosking, born in Edinburgh and now rowing for London Rowing Club, is competing at the same event in the Women's Lightweight Quadruple Scull. Sophie has a bronze medal in this event from 2006, and a silver from 2007, so will be hoping to go one better this time round.

Nat Champs Report: Holme Pierpont once again lived up to its windy reputation this weekend, with Friday bringing a stiff headwind and Saturday a particularly nasty cross-head wind, which appeared to make the conditions very difficult on the grandstand side of the course. Despite this a good number of Scots progressed to repechages, semi-finals and finals.

First Scottish medal of the weekend went to Nithsdale ARC, with a silver in Womens J14 1x. Shortly afterwards, Clydesdale ARC added a bronze medal in Mens J15 2x.
Sunday morning brought a complete change, with excellent conditions for the pre-racing hours, which slowly reverted to a chilly cross-wind. Lanes were seeded for semi-finals and finals to take account of the wind conditions. It was a busy day from a Scottish perspective, with 16 junior crews racing in finals, and 18 seniors crews racing in finals for 13 events. The overall wins tally for the weekend was 24 medals, including golds in Womens 1x, Mens J16 2- and 2x and Womens J16 4+.

ASRA at Valenciennes: As result of their success at the GB Under 16 Junior Trials on Wednesday 9 July at the National Watersports Centre, Nottingham, four girls from the Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association represented Great Britain at the annual GB v France Match in Valenciennes on Sunday 13 July. Rowing with girls from the prestigious Lady Eleanor Holles School, London, Rosie Morton (Robert Gordon's College), Catriona Bain (Aberdeen Grammar School), Iona Riley (Hazlehead Academy) and Jamie Steel (Harlaw Academy) made up the stroke four in the GB Eight. On the day, the ASRA/LEH composite put up a magnificent performance, rowing stroke for stroke with the French Eight for most of the 1500 metres. They faded however in the last 200 metres sprint to the line and ended up three quarters of a length down on the French in the end. The next time the ASRA quartet will meet up with their erstwhile GB teammates from LEH will be in the heats of the WJ16 Coxed Fours at the National Rowing Championships of Great Britain in Nottingham on Friday!
Nat Champs: Good luck to all crews competing at Nat Champs this weekend. Results and report from Nat Champs will be posted on Monday - in the meantime, the live on-line results will be available at res.natchamps.org.uk.
Veteran Henley: Six Scots from Strathclyde Park RC and George Watsons College BC took part at Veteran Henley this weekend, in conditions which started off wet and windy on the Friday, with a strong stream and head wind, but improved on the Saturday. The Men's Veteran Double of Tom Hewitt (SPRC) and John Munro (GWCBC) raced in both E2x and F2x, making it to the semi-final of the lower age category.
The Women's Veteran Quad of Liz Davidson, Ailie Ord, Maureen McGarvey and Karen Barton competed in both B4x and C4x. Reaching the final of B4x by 3 lenghts of Sons of the Thames, the crew raced a crew which included 3 members of the loosing finalists in the same event at Henley Royal Regatta! Depsite a fast sart, they were unable to stay with this fast crew from Upper Thames. In the final of C4x, which was reaching via a close semi-final against an Upper Thames/London composite crew, the SPRC quad won a tight race, beating Cantabrigian by just a third of a length.

National Championships: The draw for Nat Champs is now available on the Nat Champs website. Over 70 crews from 14 Scottish clubs are taking part in the event, which starts on Friday 18th July in Nottingham.
Scottish Championships Medals: The lack of medals was a huge embarrassment to the Regatta Organising Committee and they apologise for the disappointment of all this year’s Scottish Rowing Champions. Despite vigorous efforts to resolve the matter, there is a supply issue outwith their control. The latest news is that they expect delivery during the first week of August and will then arrange to have the medals sent out to the clubs. Any further developments will be posted on this news page.

J16 Early Identification Camp: It is the intention of the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association to relaunch the Junior 16 Early Identification Camp in the Autumn at the National Rowing Academy, Strathclyde Park. The provisional dates for the camp are 25/26 October and it is hoped that an array of experienced guest coaches and speakers will provide a range of valuable coaching sessions and interesting talks. The camp is open to any Scottish Junior 16's (and talented Junior 15's with prior approval from the High Performance Co-Ordinator), male and female. For 2008 only, the camp will also be open to Junior 18's provided they are seeking selection for HIR as a minimum standard.
It is hoped that a full itinery will be available in due course but interested parties are asked to express an interest to Lee Boucher, High Performance Co-Ordinator, by the 31st July so as arrangements can be made.

Level 2 Coaching Course in Aberdeen: The SARA will be running a "UKCC Level 2 Coaching in Rowing" course on the 30/31 August and 6/7 September, hosted in Aberdeen by Aberdeen Boat Club. An additional assessment day will be arranged with candidates during the course. Due to the need to register with the ARA and 1st4Sport (the cross sport accreditation organisation) it is important that anyone wishing to take part on the course completes an application form and forwards the course fee before the deadline of Monday 21 July. There is pre-course work that needs to be completed by each candidate and materials that need to be ordered in advance, therefore anyone missing this deadline will not be able to attend the course.
The course fee is £265 (£195 of which is the course fee including all materials, levied by the ARA). SARA members coaching in Scotland successfully completing the course will be eligible for completion grants. All forms and fees should be sent to Jo Ramsay at the National Rowing Academy, 366 Hamilton Road, Motherwell ML1 3ED. Please mark your envelope with "UKCC Level 2".
