Aberdeen Head: Details for the rescheduled Aberdeen Head of the River for Senior 8s and Junior 4s on 14th March are now on the Committee of the Dee website - http://cofd.co.uk. Please note that the organisers have modified the event list to promote Junior racing in Fours and Quads, with the Scottish Schools Head not far away. Senior events for Eights are unchanged.

Inverness 8s and Small Boat Head: Mild but windy weather (thankfully a tailwind for racing) at the Inverness Eights and Small Boats Head on Saturday. Snapper Ron has published pictures from Division 2 on the Committee of the Dee website http://cofd.co.uk. Full results are available on this website.

GB Trials: The past 2 weekends have seen Scottish athletes competing south of the border in Boston, Lincolnshire at open trials for the GB Rowing Teams. On the 14th February, at the Senior and Under 23 Trials, due to a number of illnesses only 4 Scottish athletes took part. The highlight was the return of Katherine Grainger to the fold after her extended break following the Beijing Olympics. Despite her long break, Katherine showed her usual determination and finished in a credible 7th position, less than 8 seconds off the leader Beth Rodford.

The weekend past saw athletes from Aberdeen Schools, George Heriots School, George Watsons College, Glasgow Schools and Strathclyde Park compete over 2 days at the 2nd GB Junior Long Distance Trial. The top Scottish performer was Andrew Holmes of George Watsons College in Edinburgh, who had an excellent weekend finishing in 2nd place on Saturday (out of 43 crews) and 4th on Sunday in a scratch combination.

Great Britain Junior Time Trials: Last weekend, Scots athletes from George Watsons College Boat Club, Strathclyde Park Rowing Club, Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association and George Heriots School performed to a high standard at the GB Junior Trials at Boston, Lincolnshire. Becky McCreevy from George Heriots finished in 60th place.

Division 2 on Saturday saw an outstanding performance by George Watsons BC athlete Andrew Holmes, paired with Tom Edwards from Durham School, who claimed second place in a high quality field. Other George Watsons athletes produced fine results finishing in 20th and 21st places. George Heriots sculler Jack Leask finished in 17th place in the single sculls category of Division 2.

In Sunday's event, Jack Leask joined Christopher Thomas (QPHS) to claim 8th place in the double sculls. Andrew Holmes again produced an outstanding row in the coxless pairs event, this time with Stewart Innes (SES) to claim 4th place, followed in 13th place by Calum McBrierty and James Scott (Shrewsberry). In the womens coxless pairs category, Aberdeen Schools Rosie Morton and Jamie Steel finished in 12th place, ahead of Strathclyde Park's Rosie Young and Natalie Irvine in 13th place, Becky McCreevy (George Heriots) and Isobel Currie (Headington) in 16th place and Iona Riley and Catriona Bain (ASRA) in 17th place.

Aberdeen Eights Head: Ron Wallace reports from the frozen north -
Ice floes on he River Dee Sadly, the Aberdeen Eights HOR had to be cancelled on the day after overnight temperatures plummeted (down to -8 deg C in Oldmeldrum) causing the river to freeze. I had been out in my single scull at 2pm on Saturday and conditions were fine. The above picture shows the beautiful blue skies and flat calm on Sunday morning; it's just a shame about the ice-floes !

Commiserations to Dundee UBC and Inverness RC who had early starts and arrived to find a non-event. Perhaps the free pie and tea provided by the Committee of the Dee to disappointed visitors may have raised their spirits (or at least their cholesterol levels). Thanks also to umpires and other helpers who travelled to Aberdeen. We hope to re-run the event (date subject to SARA approval). Some pictures of the icy river and ASRA having fun in training tubs are available on the CofD website.

FISA World Masters: The World Masters Regatta has officially matured into a four day regatta - details on the World Rowing website.

Mens Open Hwt medalists Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships: On Sunday 1st February, a significant entry was received and many exciting races took place at the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships which again were held at Heriot Watt University campus at Riccarton. Jonathan Adams (Clydesdale ARC) produced the fastest time of the day in winning the Mens Open Heavyweight event in 6 mins 10.6 sec whilst his clubmate Karen Bennet recorded the fastest time of 7 mins 13.1 secs to win the equivalent Womens Open event in a nail biting finish just over one second ahead of Jen Reid of Edinburgh University BC.

The boys and girls Under 19 heavyweight events both produced the most exciting and closest finishes of the championships.
