Strathclyde Park Regatta: Results from SPR 2009 are now available - Saturday and Sunday in pdf format. There was a particularly healthy entry this year, with racing running to almost 11 hours on both days. Saturday started with fine conditions, little wind and sunshine, but a strong cross-wind through the middle of the day made attaching at the starts difficult and lead to very choppy conditions through the middle of the 2k course. Racing over the 1k course was moved to the 2k start for a period and conditions improved at the end of the day. Sunday was a similar story, with variable wind and unfortunately little sunshine.

Thank you from SUBC: Strathclyde University Boat Club would like to once again thank all the clubs for helping them out this weekend after a bus crashed into their trailer. Thank you to Dundee University, St Andrew BC, Nithsdale ARC, Glasgow RC, Clydesdale ARC and Tom Hewitt for lending boats.

Rules of Racing: A revised version of the Rules of Racing has now been posted on the Downloads page.

GB Trials: At last weekend's GB trials in Hazewinkel, Katherine Grainger of St Andrew Boat Club won the women's singles event for an impressive 8th time. Full results and news of all the Scottish trialists can be found on the ARA GB Rowing News page.

Boat Transporting: Advice from the North East Rowing News Group:
Recently a car was stopped leaving York City RC after the Head with a double on its roof rack. The overhang of the boat was within the allowed limits both front and rear but the boat was not adequately visible from the sides. The police felt that a pedestrian could have walked into the boat while crossing the road behind, or in front of, the car. The driver was fined £60 on the spot and given 3 points on his licence.

Until we get better advice, it is advised that anyone car topping a boat or with dark coloured boats overhanging the back of a trailer should ensure that there is plenty of red and white tape along the overhanging part of the boat and that there is a red and white triangle (as on trailer boards) on the front and back of the boat. If there is a significant overhang at the front you should carry a co-driver to allow you to pull out of blind junctions. It is also good practice to carry a copy of the ARA Trailer Driver's Handbook to show to any policeman who stops you, having made sure before you set off that your load complies with the rules.

Junior Coach Disclosures: For this year's HIR team the management are requiring all junior coaches who have not had a Disclosure Check carried out via SARA or Scottish Rowing more recently than June 2008 to have a refresher or new Disclosure completed before HIR. Since the process takes weeks rather than days, Lee Boucher and I will be processing Disclosure Applications during Strathclyde Park Regatta.

Those wanting Disclosures need to attend in person as we have to check their identity and address evidence in person. Documentation required consists of:
1. birth certificate,
2. photographic evidence of identity - eg passport or driving licence with photo,
3. evidence of address - eg driving licence, utility bill, recent bank statement, council tax letter.
Please note, a photo driving licence can be used for EITHER identity or address verification, BUT NOT BOTH.

The process will be repeated at the Scottish Championships in June. It is doubtful whether those who do not have the process started then will have it completed in time for HIR, so will not be eligible to attend as a Junior Team Coach.

GB Rowing Trials: 6 Scottish athletes are currently competing in Hazewinkel, Belgium at the GB Rowing Senior Team Trials, all hoping for seats in boats heading to the upcoming World Cup series. Katherine Grainger (St Andrew Boat Club) will be seeking her eighth women's title since 1998 in a strong line up of women's scullers that includes Kirsty Myles (Leander Club, ex George Watson's College) and Lindsey Maguire (Wallingford, World Class Start). Heather Stanning (Army, World Class Start), another Scottish born athlete competes in the women's pair. In the men's categories, 2 Scottish Henley winners seek selection at Senior / Under 23 level for the first time. Murray Wilkojc (Newcastle University, ex George Watson's College) will be competing in the single scull whilst Colin Williamson (Leander Club, ex Aberdeen Boat Club, Aberdeen University Boat Club & Inverness Rowing Club) teams up with Nick Clark in the heavyweight pairs event.

Closing Date for SPR: Reminder that SPR entries close on Tuesday 14th April at 5pm and that forms/invoices and cheques must be posted to the NRA by this date. On-line entry links and further information are available on the right hand side of this page.

North-East Regatta: Details for 2009's second regatta on 9th & 10th May are now available on the Committee of the Dee website.

Governance: At the Half-Yearly Meeting on Sunday 23rd March, final approval for converting the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association from an unincorporated association to a registered company limited by guarantee, operating under the new name of Scottish Rowing. This move gives important legal protection to all involved in our sport by limiting, in particular, financial liability. This means a couple of changes. First of all, instead of having a Constitution we now have a Memorandum and Articles of Association (known as M & A's) and an Operating Practices document. The M & A's deal with how Scottish Rowing is run as a company. The Operating Practices deal with how rowing in Scotland is run. Most of the provisions of the old Constitution have been incorporated into these documents and some things which many of us thought were in the Constitution but actually weren't have been brought in too. The second change is that the 'Executive' is now the 'Board'.

HIR 2009: The selection policy for HIR 2009, along with a letter from the Team Manager, is now available on the International Page.

Barony Cup: The 5th annual staging of the Barony Cup races between current and past student members of Strathclyde University Boat Club took place on the River Clyde on Saturday 4th April. Four separate eights races were held over a 500 metre course finishing close to the Strathclyde University boathouse. In the first race, the men's university second crew overcame the graduate crew by just over one length in the tricky cross-wind conditions. That proved to be the only win for the students as in the men's first crew race, an extremely competent graduate crew, which included a number of international oarsmen, narrowly won a most exciting race by the closest margin of 3 feet. Both the women's and mixed races resulted in wins for the graduate crews which tipped the overall balance of wins in favour of the graduates to allow George Parsonage to present the Barony Cup to the winning captain, Jonny Graham.

Photographs from the Barony Cup and from Men's and Veteran's Tideway are now available on the photographs page.
