Aberdeen Sprint Regatta: Report courtesy of Roy Sinclair.
Last Saturday 19th September, members of clubs from Aberdeen, Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow took part in a well organised regatta which included a wide variety of junior, senior and veteran events being held on the 500 metre course on the River Dee in Aberdeen. Crews from the Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association were successful in 20 of the events staged, whilst crews from Inverness Rowing Club won a total of 10 events ahead of the 9 events won by Aberdeen Boat Club. A highly exciting mens Restricted 2 single sculls event between Colin Wallace of ASRA and Casper Van den Nouland of Aberdeen Boat Club required a immediate re-row after the final resulted in a dead heat; Wallace winning the re-row by a canvas.

The prize will be a free 2 hour coaching session for the winner and their crew with a high performance coach at their club. Closing date for entries will be the 14th October. This will allow clubs to see the entries at the AGM. Entries should be sent to Jo Ramsay, Scottish Rowing Administrator.
Coaches Wanted! Part 2: Edinburgh University women's squad are currently looking for voluntary coaches. They have enjoyed success in recent seasons (including the BUCS championships, Henley Womens Regatta and most recently the EUSA championships) and are looking to continue and build on this. EUBC has a hugely committed and enthusiastic women's squad who would gain immense benefit from high performance coaching. They train on the water on Saturday and Sundays at Dullatur and on the Union canal in Edinburgh on weekday mornings. Please get in touch with Mini Monteith if you think you would be interested.

Golden Success at the World Rowing Masters Regatta 2009 - Vienna: Report courtesy of Roy Sinclair:
Last weekend in difficult headwind conditions, Masters oarsmen and oarswomen from throughout the world and from many clubs throughout the length and breadth of Scotland took part in a wide variety of rowing and sculling events at this year?s annual World Rowing Masters Regatta on the 1000 metre rowing course alongside the River Danube in Vienna.
Most successful Scottish athlete at this year's event was Ailie Ord from Strathclyde Park RC with three golds. On the Friday, she was in the stroke seat of the Womens Vet B 4x crew with her Strathclyde Park crewmates Karen Barton, Maureen McGarvey and Mary-Ann Chalmers which won by a margin of approximately four seconds from two German and one Danish crew. Her other gold medals were won on Thursday in the Womens Vet D 4+ with crewmates from various English clubs and on Sunday in the Mixed Veteran D 8 crew in which four members of Mladost RC in Croatia, members from the Sons of Thames RC and Mortlake/Anglia RC and Hazel Smith from Inverness RC also won gold medals.
One of the closest races of the four day event took place in the Mens Vet F single sculls in which Gordon Kerr from Nithsdale RC established a lead of approximately three seconds at the halfway mark. His closest opposition from Christiana RK in Croatia chased him all the way to the finishing line but the lighter Gordon held on in the strong headwind to seal a brilliant win by the closest margin of 0.10 second to claim his gold medal. As chairman of the FISA Masters Rowing Commission, Peter Morrison from Aberdeen took great delight in presenting Gordon with his well deserved gold medal to the rousing cheers of the enthusiastic Scottish supporters.
A substantial number of other Scottish athletes also took part in the variety of events offered with many challenging well for the top places in their chosen events, some narrowly missing out on gold medals. Photographs from the event are now in the photographs section - page 1 and page 2.

Scottish Medal Success at EUSA: Report courtesy of Lee Boucher and John Sarahs:
Scottish Universities played their part in helping Great Britain finish in second place overall at the 5th European Universities (EUSA) Rowing Championships in Kruszwica, Poland, this weekend. Competition was of an exceptional standard as the Polish national team who had competed and also medalled at the World Championships in Poznan last week had their team rowing for their respective universities. The 120 strong GB squad included a number of Scottish rowers.
The only GB Gold medal was won Polly Swann and Jen Reid of Edinburgh University, who brought home gold in the women’s coxless pair and bronze in the women’s eight. Polly and Jen dominated the pairs event, winning by a margin of nearly 8 seconds from the University of Zurich, following a strong surge in the middle of the race.
They then joined up with their Edinburgh University crewmates (Rhona MacCallum, Minette Monteith, Kit Litzinger, Isobel Jones, Rowena Mortimer, Michaela Spitzer and cox Charlotte Jones) to secure bronze in the eight, pushing rowing heavyweights Cambridge University out of the medals. Aberdeen University, represented in the women’s double sculls event by Jenny Chambers and Stephanie McDowall, were involved in an extremely tight finish in their final. Sitting in fourth position for most of the race, the double raised their boat speed over the last 500 metres and pushed through Imperial College London, to take an impressive bronze medal.
Stephanie also finished in 6th place in the W1x. Edinburgh University's Alistair Sarahs finished 8th in the M1x as did Amanda Larcombe of Glasgow University in the W1x. Congratulations to their coach George Warnock on a great achievement. Other notable Scottish achievements were Seonaid Crosbie Durham University, formerly ASRA winning Silver in the W8+ and finishing 8th in the W4x. Alistair Chappelle Cambridge University, and Murray Wilkojc Newcastle University both formerly George Watson's College winning Bronze in the LM4- and finishing 6th in the M4- respectively.
The Scottish medal haul contributed to a British team total of 11 overall – 1 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze, which saw Team GB finish as runners up to the hosts Poland, who fielded a world class team including athletes who had recently competed at the Senior World Rowing Championships in Poznan.
