Record Entry for Aberdeen HoR: Ron Wallace, Secretary of the Committee of the Dee is delighted (and somewhat apprehensive) to report a record entry for the Fours HOR at Aberdeen this Saturday with 102 boats racing in 2 divisions. Things are a bit quieter (but still a good entry) for Sunday’s Small-Boats HOR. Ron does ask all competitors (including local rowers) to allow for the inevitable congestion at launching areas and during marshalling at the start so please adjust your alarm clocks appropriately as we have an early start forced on us by the tides. They are delighted to see large numbers of rowers coming up from Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh to compete on the Dee.

Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships: Details for the 2010 Indoor Champs are now available on the Indoor Rowing page.

World Coastal Rowing Champs: The coastal version of the World Champs was help in Plymouth last weekend - results and a report are on the World Rowing website.

Clyde Head: The final draw for the Clyde Head is now available.

Head of the Forth Photographs: More photos from last weekend's head are now on David Nolan's flickr page. Hi-res versions are available from David to anyone who wants them.

37th Lac Leman Challange: The 37th edition of the DEFIHYPOSWISS Tour du Leman a l’Aviron brought the third consecutive win for Matthias Auer (Clydesdale ARC) and his German rowing mates Olaf Behrend (Karlsruhe), Jochen Domscheit (Stuttgart), Markus Neumann (Mainz) and Sebastian Frohn (Stuttgart). In comparison to the 2 years before (record in 2007 is 11h 55min and the chaotic tour in 2008 with strong winds and only 5 boats finishing) this year’s race was rather unspectacular: of the 25 crews starting, 24 made the 160km along the coastline of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman).

After a strong and apparently, a bit too optimistic start of a French composite crew (it was the only team which did not finish) the Scottish-German team took the lead after about 40 minutes, shortly after the first checkpoint in Versoix. Following this they steadily increased the lead and were about 10 minutes ahead of Ludwigshafener RV approximately half way in Montreux. Along the French coast line they steadily increased the distance on their hardest opponents to a final 22 minutes at the finish line. The conditions were good but not ideal, so the finishing time of 12h 17min was a fair bit slower than in 2007, but still the 7th best time ever. The Tour-du-Leman legends from Ludwigshafen came second, beating their own record in the Veterans category by 7 minutes (12h 39min), followed by the crew from Cologne (Kölner Club fürWassersport) which finished just below the 13h-barrier in 12h 59min.

Photography: On 18th September, a note was posted regarding the policy of George Watson's College on photographs being taken of its pupils. This note was simply a quick way of informing the Scottish Rowing community of the College's position. It does not imply Scottish Rowing support for this policy. Individuals are at liberty to decide for themselves how far they feel able to accede to the College's wishes in this matter. Rowing events almost always take place in public places and neither the organising club nor Scottish Rowing has any legal control over the actions of individuals present when the events take place.

Head of the Forth Photographs: There are a selection of images from the Head of the Forth on both Niall Darroch's and Snapper Ron's websites. Not the usual comprehensive coverage as the photos were snatched between marshalling/head umpire duties!

Aberdonian UFOAberdeen HoR: Snapper Ron also reminds readers that entries for the Aberdeen HOR weekend on 31st October/1st November close on Monday 26th October. Entry details are on http://cofd.co.uk.

Head of the Forth: Results from Saturday's Head of the Forth are now available. The race was held in glorious conditions at Stirling, with sunshine and no wind. Fastest crew down the course was Edinburgh University, co-hosts of the event, who also won the Victor Ludorum prize. Special mention must go to Strathclyde University Boat Club, who had to race to the start, having broken down en-route - thanks go to the helpers who rigged their boats and put them on the water, ready for the crews to jump into.

Inverness Fours and Small Boats Heads: Details for these two head races on the 14th and 15th November are now on the Inverness RC website (see below).

Club Websites: Both Clyde ARC and Inverness RC have new websites - www.clydearc.org.uk and www.invernessrowingclub.org.uk respectively.

Northern Rowing Council: A link of one of the Small Boats Heads which takes place in the north of England - Tyne Long Distance Sculls.

Throw Bag Safety Recall: The following safety notice has been issued by crew-saver - www.crewsaver.co.uk/Crewsaver/Yak_Throw_Bag_Safety_Notice/. The Glasgow Humane Society also remind us all that throwbags should be regularly checked for defects and a maintenance system should be in-place.

Loch Lomond Head: Loch Lomond RC advise that due to factors beyond the control of the organising body it is regretted that the event has had to be cancelled.

St Andrew/Edinburgh University Head: The draw for the Head of the Forth on Saturday is now available.

Clydesdale Scullers Head: Results from the singles and doubles divisions at last weekend's Scullers Head.

Glasgow Fours Head of River: Glasgow Rowing Club invites you to the Glasgow Fours Head of River, which will be held on Saturday November 7th. The prize list has been slightly expanded, including categories for mixed crews and veteran/status combinations. A pdf poster can be downloaded from the GRC website and the full race information is also available. The on-line entry system will be available for 10 days before entries close. Entries close on Sunday 1st November.

Glasgow Fireworks, 5th November: Advance notice to all members of clubs based at the East Boathouse on Glasgow Green - as the boathouses are within the fireworks exclusion zone there will be no vehicular or pedestrian access after 5pm on the 5th November as the river walkway will be closed to form the exclusion zone and there will be debris from the display on the walkway after the display at 7.30pm.

Scottish Rowing Awards: Please note that the closing date for the awards has been extended to 5pm, Wednesday 14th October.

Missing Riggers: Dundee UBC are missing a pair of Carl Douglas 1x riggers - normally fitted to a Burgashell mid-weight 1x. They are dark grey annodised and have the older rounded style of plastic oarlock, not Concept 2. They are maybe annotated "Inverness RC" as the boat came from there originally. "Torvean" or "Corrieshalloch" could also be labelled on there. They were in the boathouse at Easter. The club went to SPR, NE regatta in Aberdeen, or Clydesdale regatta in Glasgow in May. Their absence was suggested around the end of May when our boathouse was being emptied for construction work, but could not be confirmed until this weekend. If you've found a stray pair of single riggers answering to their appearance, please let us know - the boat is a bit difficult to row without them! Please contact Robin Dickinson if you think you have found them.

UFO Sighted in Aberdeen: The members of Aberdeen Boat Club have been creating quite a stir - the unusual sight of a few Chinese Laterns was taken to be UFOs by local residents, prompting reports in the Press and Jounral and Evening Express as well as mentions on Northsound Radio and Original FM! We await pictures of the incident from Aberdeen's resident Snapper Ron!

Head of the River Fours: Discussions with the Head of the River Fours organisers have established that competitors can ignore the section on the web site concerning 'evidence' of status. Instead Sandy Walker will be asked to authenticate the entry once it has been made.

NRA Boat Hire: Clubs are reminded that should they wish the use of any National Rowing Academy boats for events out with Strathclyde Park, that they must contact the Scottish Rowing Vice-President (Performance), Ian White, before booking boats. Clubs are recommended to do this before they make their entries to specific events in case the number of requests exceeds the number of available boats. Specifically clubs wishing to use NRA boats for the Scottish Rowing Trial and Inverness IRC Fours Head on 14th November are asked to contact Ian by 18.00 on Friday 30th October. In all cases the fee for use must be paid prior to the boats being taken away.

Latest Information on the PVG Scheme: The latest Progress Update from the Scottish Government on the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG Scheme) is now available. Included in this issue are updates on guidance and training plans, secondary legislation and an article about the policy direction on regulated work with children and protected adults. Also included on the web pages are revised FAQS on the PVG Scheme.

Pictures from FISA World Masters: After a bit of a delay, Snapper Ron (and Mrs Snapper) have published a range of pictures from the FISA World Masters Regatta held in Vienna last month. The pictures feature an eclectic range from rowing triumphs to sight-seeing round the spectacular city. Even though the medal-haul was less than in previous years, the socialising was up to its usual high standard. Special thanks to Caroline Keith of Inverness RC who, as a previous Vienna resident, was the chief tour guide for the Northern-north-British squad from Inverness and Aberdeen. Pictures on http://cofd.co.uk.

Scottish Rowing Equity Policy: Please note that the Equity section on the Governance page has now been updated, following the completion of the Foundation Level in Equity.

Their HOR weekend takes place on Saturday 31st Oct and Sun 1st November, details are published on the Committee of the Dee website. Entries close at midnight on Monday 26th October.

Glasgow Fours Head: Details for this head on the 7th November are now available on the GRC website.

Early ID Long Distance Trial: Scottish Rowing will be holding an Early Identification Long-Distance Trial in Inverness on the 14th November 2009, prior to the Inverness IRC Fours Head. The basis of this trial is to allow the identification of potential athletes seeking selection for the Scotland Teams for the 2010 Home Countries International Regatta and the 2010 Commonwealth Regatta and for future teams. It will also seek to identify athletes who may be able to progress on to recognised pathways for selection to GB teams.

Racing Licence Points in England: A new document has been placed on the downloads page describing how Scottish rowing points should be translated to the new ARA points system. Those considering entering the Fours Head will need to consider this when entering.

Reminders from the Scottish Rowing Administrator: Reminder to all clubs about the competition for the new Scottish Rowing logo (see 16th September) and also for nominations for the Scottish Rowing Awards.

4 October

Clydesdale Scullers Head: Reminder to all clubs that entries for the Scullers Head close at noon on Monday.

Head of the Forth: Please note that due to the tides on the River Forth, the start time for this event will be 3.30pm, and not 2pm as originally stated.

Missing Riggers: Glasgow Rowing Club have lost a set of 4- riggers after HIR. They believe that they came up on the trailer, but were separated from the boat sometime thereafter. They are Carl Douglas grey anodized 3-stay (not wing) riggers and were made especially for the boat last year. They may be sitting around in a corner of a clubhouse somewhere - could clubs please check for them. Please contact Alastair Warnock if you find them.
