Scottish Rowing Newsletter: Roy Sinclair would like to invite contributions for the fifth issue of the Scottish Rowing Newsletter and would be grateful if you or your club scribe could provide an article suitable for inclusion in this issue. As we approach the end of the spell in which the Head Races and National Time Trials have taken place, we're sure that some interesting epistles can be submitted for the Newsletter which all clubs can use as a suitable and effective method to showcase their club activities and recent successes. All contributions, plus any appropriate photographs, will be most appreciated. Submission of details and pics to Roy no later than Monday 5th April please.

Glasgow Spring Regatta: Details for the Glasgow Spring Regatta, being held on Saturday 17th April over a 1150m course on the River Clyde are now available. The on-line entry system will be available from April 1 and entries close on Sunday 11 April.

Racing Licences and Rules of Racing: With the season now well underway and the first regattas including Strathclyde Park Regatta due next month, clubs are reminded of the following:

1. A Competition Licence is required AT TIME OF ENTRY, not the day of the event. This rule will be strictly applied at Strathclyde Park Regatta which includes the Scottish Universities Championships. I strongly suggest that any outstanding applications are forwarded without delay to avoid competing under a Day Ticket, applications may not be turned round at short notice.

2. A further reminder that the Rules of Racing in respect of the condition of bow balls were amended with effect from the start of 2010. A note giving guidance has previously been emailed to all club contacts but crews are again reminded it is their responsibility to ensure that their boat complies with the Rules. Boats which fail Control Commission checks at SPR for bow balls as well as other reasons such as heel restraints and buoyancy requirements, will not be allowed to proceed to the start.

Head of the River: The Men's Tideway races takes place tomorrow lunchtime, with 15 Scottish crews from clubs in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow taking part. Full results are likely to be on the HoRR website later on Saturday. The Vesta Veterans Head will take place on Sunday, running over a course from Hammersmith to Chiswick, with crews from Aberdeen Boat Club taking part.

Niall is happy for clubs to use any of the small sized images for your websites. If you could give him a picture credit and or a link to his website that would be appreciated. If you need help doing this, just drop Niall an email.

Prospective Coaches for the Scotland HIR Team: At the Half-Yearly Meeting of Scottish Rowing the selection policy for athletes and coaches for the 2010 Home INternational Regatta was approved. This new policy includes a significant addition to previous ones regarding COACHES. The 2010 policy requires ALL Scotland Team coaches to hold Disclosure Certificates obtained through Scottish Rowing. Coaches fo senior athletes are included as well as those for juniors because it is highly probable that senior coaches may well find themselves at some point coaching juniors or being the responsible adult in charge of juniors - even for just a short period of time. If you do not have a Disclosure obtained through Scottish Rowing you will not be appointed as an HIR Team coach. For all enquiries in relation to this matter the person to contact is Tom Hewitt (contact details obtainable from this site) who has a list of all coaches currently holding appropriate Disclosures. Tom will be on hand throughout most of the Strathclyde Park Regatta to process applications for Disclosures. Completing the paperwork takes no more than a few minutes. You will need to have with you:
1. Photographic evidence of identity - eg passport or photo-type driving licence.
2. Evidence of your current address - eg driving licence, utility bill, bank statement, or some other sort of 'official' document. NB Your driving licence cannot be used for both purposes.
3. Details of address history covering the last 5 years - including post codes.

Women's Eights HoRR: At the WEHORR on Saturday, a Glasgow composite crew won the Novice Academic Category. The crew, composed of students from Glasgow Rowing Club, Glasgow University and Strathclyde University posted an excellent time of 20 minutes 53.94 seconds to win the Novice Academic category. Rowing in an eight named "Lighty Lins" after their coach and former World Bronze Medallist Lindsay Dick, the girls won their event, achieving a highly satisfactory finish position of 98th overall. The crew were: cox Alastair Browne (Glasgow RC), Jane Patterson (Glasgow University BC), Jenni Campbell and Shona Dunn (Strathclyde University BC), Kate Ianniello, Joanne Thomson, Olivia Davidson, Katherina Johnston and Beth MacMaster (all Glasgow RC).

Other Scottish crews performed with distinction: a composite elite junior crew containing a Glasgow Academy athlete finished in 14th place, followed in 20th place by a composite senior crew from Clyde ARC, Edinburgh University BC, Glasgow RC and Glasgow University BC and intermediate 3 crews from Clydesdale ARC and Edinburgh University BC in 35th and 38th place respectively.

School's Head: At the Schools Head of the River which also took place over the same course on the Thames on Thursday 11th March, boys and girls crews from George Watsons College and George Heriots School took part. The fastest time achieved by a Scottish crew was posted by the George Watsons Junior Coxed Four, finishing in 101st place overall from a start position of 200.

Clydesdale 4s and 8s Head of The River: Results from Saturday's racing are now available. Photographs from the second division are also now up on the gallery page of Niall Darroch's website. There are also some photographs on the Inverness RC gallery.

Towing - Don't let this happen to you!: A Scottish rowing club driver is being prosecuted for having a licence which was not appropriate to the vehicle and trailer combination being driven. Go to the Safety section on the Governance Page for more information on what your licence allows you to do. A seminar will be organised to take place during Strathclyde Park Regatta which will cover this and other matters relating to boat transport. All current and potential trailer drivers should attend.

Nestlé Go Set Go Free: Scottish Rowing is endorsing the forthcoming Nestlé Go Set Go Free promotion. We are encouraging clubs to support this campaign and take the opportunity to help get more people in boats, on the water and joining clubs while growing the profile of the sport. In order to take part in the promotion, you will need to offer a session between 30 minutes and two hours. This can be one of your regular club training sessions, the details of which would need to be provided, including any restrictions, e.g. age and swimming ability. The promotion works on the basis of people purchasing designated Nestle products and redeeming tokens. Details and forms have been emailed to all club secretaries with a deadline of 26 March to return agreement forms to the promoter.

Universities Winter League: The final result of the Scottish Universities winter league, after 7 events are as listed below. With a strong showing in the last event Strathclyde managed to increase their lead over Dundee and most of their rivals. Edinburgh put in a very good final push and although they closed the gap slightly on Strathclyde it was never going to be enough. This year the league was very competitive and any of four clubs could have won going into the last event. With good entries in all of the qualifying events it looks good for the rest of the season and the championships at the end of April.

Please note that on the day of the event the forecast is for cold weather, so dress accordingly. Scottish Schools Head: Details for the Scottish Schools' Head of the Canal on the 20th of March are now available.

AUBC vs RGU in their annual match Aberdeen Universities’ Boat Race: The Aberdeen Universities’ Boat Race between Robert Gordon University and Aberdeen University was held on Sunday 28th February. The event was again sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and organised by Bob Newton of ABC along with a large squad of helpers. There had been doubts about the event until a few days before with the River Dee having been frozen the previous weekend. All the ice had cleared and a brief shower of hailstones during the coin-toss to choose stations was the only precipitation. The wind, however, had strengthened to create challenging conditions for rowers of all ability, especially near the start and finish of the races.

RGUBC won the Second-Crew race, leaving AUBC to take both major honours with wins in the Alumni race and the main Universities event. Her AUBC crew subjected poor Tania, their cox (and President), to a traditional dunking in the river – not a pleasant experience considering that only the week before she would have bounced rather than got wet. Hopefully she had warmed up enough to enjoy the dancing at the Ball in the evening, sustained by the inner satisfaction of having regained the trophy which had been won by RGU in 2009. Snapper Ron has published pictures on the Committee of the Dee website.

Universities Winter League: The current position of the Scottish Universities winter league, after 6 events and one event remaining, with Inverness cancelled, are as listed. Yet again Strathclyde have managed to increase their lead slightly over Dundee. However this time it was Aberdeen to who moved up the table passing St Andrews University.
