BR Rules of Racing: Scottish crews should be aware of a number of the Rule changes in the BR Rules of Racing which affect Scottish crews competing down south, someone has already fallen foul of the changes, and came into force on 1 April. In particular crews should note the following:
- A win in an event where nine or more crews start will be rewarded with two status points in the relevant discipline, rowing or sculling. This will apply to Scottish crews when compting under BR Rules.
- The requirement for every racing boat to carry a six-digit ID number has been included in Rule 2-3-8. A boat competing without identification therefore risks disqualification when competing under BR Rules.
- BR Rule L as follows;
SECTION L: BOAT IDENTIFICATION. All boats being used from clubs for racing, training, and recreation, including private craft, safety and coaching launches shall be identifiable by the three letter code, as issued by British Rowing, together with a three digit fleet number (including zeros) as determined by the club. The lettering shall be in capitals, in a regular sans serif (Arial“style”) font, with a minimum height of 6cm and clearly readable (in a contrasting colour) on both port and starboard bow saxboards, or vertical surface.
Boat Hire for the Scottish Championships: For the benefit of newcomers to the system of boat hire at the Scottish Championships Regatta, this document gives a short explanation of how the system works.
Podium finishes for Scots at Munich World Cup: Report from Lee Boucher:
It was a successful outing for the Scottish contingent competing as part of the GB Rowing Team which on Sunday won 11 medals, including five golds, at the Samsung World Rowing Cup in Munich, Germany. There was gold for three-time Olympic silver medallist Katherine Grainger from Aberdeen, rowing with super-sub Mel Wilson in the women's double in the absence of the injured Anna Watkins. ‘Scratch pairing’ Grainger and Wilson sculled to a controlled victory on Munich's blue-hued water. Austria led briefly off the start but by 250 metres into the race, the British duo had created a canvas lead. This built to a half-length lead over the USA at 500 metres. Grainger and Wilson were pressed a little by the Americans at this point before pulling away to clearwater by 1500 metres and kept this advantage all the way to the line. "Mel has had a great season so far in the single and it came together surprisingly quickly for us as a double. It was a good race," said Grainger.
Lossiemouth’s Heather Stanning and Cornwall’s Helen Glover proved they have the ability to sustain their "surprise" World Championships silver medal of last year by taking gold here in the women’s coxless pair.
Stanning and Glover, both products of the GB Rowing Team Start Programme, pushed out to half a length lead in the early stages of their final. They were chased by the Netherlands and the USA. At the 1000 metre stage the British still held the lead - now three-quarters of a length - and looked controlled.In the third 500 metres of the race, Army officer Stanning, and Glover looked ever more impressive. They had clearwater at 1750 metres gone and held off a strong American sprint to take their first World Rowing Cup gold as a combination. "The big difference is that we've had a good, solid winter of training. Last year we were working as well as training but this year we've been able to focus more," said Stanning.
The women's eight, stroked by Edinburgh’s Lindsey Maguire, were well-placed through the first 500 metres of their final, lying a close second to the Netherlands. By halfway, though, the Netherlands had eased into a strong lead in the inside lane. Three lanes away Britain and Romania went stroke for stroke and in the final sprint the GB boat picked up the pace and began to challenge even the Netherlands before tailing off to get silver and their first medal of the 2011 campaign.
There was further Scottish success in the GB Paralympic-class boats, when Dunfermline’s David Smith and his crew took gold in the mixed adaptive coxed four. It wasn’t an easy victory though as 2009 World Champion Smith did well to recover from a considerable crab with only 300 metres to go. Aberdeen Boat Club member Kate Jones was in the second GB boat which finished in bronze medal position just behind Germany. David Smith said: “It’s an amazing feeling to win gold especially after making such a big mistake. It’s a long time since I last raced (at the World Championships in Poznan 2009) and a long way back from rehab and it was just one of those things. But we recovered quickly and after another racing start we thankfully managed to keep it all together."

Phil Craze's world record attempt: Phil Craze, an IT Project Manager with AEGON, has broken the world record record for most meters rowed on an ergo in 24 hours. Phil covered an amazing 313,112m (an average split of 2:18/500m) beating the existing record by just 136m. Phil attempted the challenge in support of the Stroke Association Scotland and Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland. Phil, 36, said: "Just over a year ago, my older brother suffered a stroke at the age of 37 and for six months was partially paralysed down his left side. Luckily, he has now made a full recovery. My mother-in-law has suffered from MS for the past 20 years. Both the Stroke Association Scotland and Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland charities therefore are important to me and I wanted to do something that would show my thanks for all their hard work."
For Phil's record attempt to be valid he had to row continuously throughout the 24 hour period with breaks lasting a maximum of 45 seconds. Speaking shortly afterwards Phil said: "I am absolutely thrilled, I aimed to break my age group world record but its amazing that I have broken the overall world record. It has been an exhausting but exhilarating 24 hours. I have received an overwhelming amount of support and I am really grateful.’ Phil aimed to raise £1,000 for each charity but has surpassed the targets by reaching a total of £1,884.00 for MS Society Scotland and £2,461.00 for The Stroke Association. It is still possible to contribute to the following sponsorship pages - www.justgiving.com/Phil-Craze-MS, www.justgiving.com/Phil-Craze.
