Strathclyde Park Loch Closure: The Lanarkshire International Children's Gameswill be held at Strathclyde Park from Monday 1st till Sunday 7th August.
Exclusive use of the Loch has been taken between Thursday 4th and Sunday 7th, so there will be no rowing at the Park between those dates. Parking within the Watersports Centre compound will be limited.
On Sunday 7th, the police have insisted that access to the Watersports Centre area be restricted to competitors and officials only as the closing ceremony takes place then, so there will be no Gym access on the Sunday either.
Coupe de la Jeunesse: Clydesdale's Kieran Brown has been selected for the GB Rowing Team which will compete at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Linz, Austria, from Friday 29th to Sunday
31st July. Kieran will row in the Junior Men's Quadruple Scull against 8 other crews from across Europe. Given Kieran's nasty injury only a matter of months ago this represents a fantastic achievement, so big congratulations to both Kieran and his coach Chris Phillips. Full results and other details from the Coupe de la Jeunesse on the official website www.couperowing.org

Inverness Sprint: Details for this event are now available on the Inverness RC website.
Opportunity to Participate in a Research Study: Rachel Arnold of the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University is looking for volunteers for her PhD study,
She is exploring the pressures that sport performers have experienced as part of their participation in competitive sport. To explore this, she has developed a short indicator (which takes around only 15 minutes and is very easy to complete). The indicator can be extremely helpful to rowers, since it can not only help them to identify the factors that are creating stress for them within their sporting environments, but also at what intensity these occur and how often. She needs to collect around 700 indicators for this study, so would be really grateful of any help. All that the indicator requires is that respondents are sport performers (18 years or older) who have participated in competitive sport over the past month at a club level or higher. Any personally identifiable information that is provided on the indicator will remain confidential. Apart from the researchers, nobody will have access to any responses. If you would like to participate, follow this line for the online indicator - www.survey.lboro.ac.uk/osi-sp.

Update from the World U23 Champs: From Lee Boucher:
Scottish oarsman Andy Holmes has today won a bronze medal whilst competing for the GB Rowing Team at the World Under 23 Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. The GB men’s eight, with Lochwinnoch rower Holmes in the six seat, maintained an overlap with the early leaders, the Czech Republic, in the first quarter of the race before the Czech’s and the USA moved away from the field to battle it out for the gold medal. With just 500 metres to go the British crew were sitting just behind last year’s world champions Germany in fourth place, but they produced a big finish to claw back the difference and gain the vital metres as they crossed the line to match last year’s bronze medal winning performance.
There was disappointment for the British women’s eight featuring Edinburgh duo Karen Bennett and Katherine Douglas, as they found the pace in today’s final too quick, resulting in a fifth place finish. But there was an encouraging second place finish in the ‘B’ final for Britain’s lightweight men’s double scull, featuring Glasgow athlete Gavin Murty. 19-year-old Clydesdale rower Murty and his partner from Hereford, Jamie Coombes, can look back on their first involvement at this level with plenty of hope for success in future years, after a result which placed them eighth out of a strong field of twenty four entries in this Olympic class event.

Further News from the U23 World Champs: From Lee Boucher:
All Scottish athletes racing on Friday as part of the GB Rowing Team at the World U23 Rowing Championships in Amsterdam progressed through to the next stage of competition after another encouraging day at the Bosbaan. Clydesdale oarsman Gavin Murty in the lightweight double scull missed out on direct progression through to Saturday’s semi-final on Thursday after being rowed down in the final 250 metres. Today, at the 500 metre mark in their repechage of this Olympic class event, they were in third place and three seconds behind crews from Russia and Portugal. But the British crew upped their intensity through the middle 1000 metres to overtake the Russian crew and sit level with the Portuguese crew coming into the final stages of the race. A solid push in the closing stages was enough to earn the British crew the outright victory and progression into Saturday’s first semi-final at 14:30 (local time) where they will face France, the fastest qualifiers from Thursday’s heats, Greece, Italy, Czech Republic and Belgium.
The British men’s eight, featuring Lochwinnoch’s Andrew Holmes, faced a stern test in their repechage today against three of the crews from last year’s final. Current world champions Germany jostled with the British crew in the opening stages before the Germans opened up a lead in the middle section of the race. Sitting in third place with 500 metres to go, Great Britain upped their stroke rate and powered through the Dutch crew to claim second place and a place in Sunday’s final. Edinburgh oarswomen Karen Bennett, 22, and Katherine Douglas, 21, rowing in the British women’s eight, might have been hoping for a more dominant performance when they raced for lanes ahead of Sunday’s final. The GB boat got off to a slow start and could not force their way back into the leading pack and in the end had to settle for fifth place, which will see them in one of the outside lanes come Sunday.

HIR 2011: The Home International Regatta was held today in excellent conditions - sunshine and just a little wind. The first events were the single sculls, with Sam Scrimgeour (Imperial) in the Lwt 1x and Francesca Sanjana (Mortlake AA) in the W1x both finishing in an excellent second position; in the J1x, David Zan-Kreyser (Wycliffe College) narrowly missed out on the 2nd place by just 0.6 seconds.
The first Scottish win of the day went to Alex Gemie and Judith Herbet (Aberdeen BC) in the Womens Lwt 2-, an event which they also won at Nat Champs. Success continued in the pairs with an excellent second place for Jo Smith and Eilidh Manson of George Heriots in the WJ2- and a win for Glasgow Academy's National Champions, Ross Urquhart and Ronan Murphy in the J2-. The women's pair, Natalie Irvine and Gillian Connal (in her second race of the day) held off the Welsh crew for a second place, and Nat Champs Bronze medalists, Scott Purdie and Colin Wallace of Aberdeen BC put in an excellent row to win the Mens pair in their 3rd HIR together. Having already won their pairs event, Alex Gemie and Judith Herbert rowed well to finish second in the lightweight double; the women's J2x of Emma McDonald (Castle Semple RC) and Olivia Davison (Glasgow RC) went one better to win their event by a convincing margin. In the men's event, Daniel Graham and Michael McNaul (both Glasgow University) sculled well to a clear second place.
Nat Champs gold medalists from ASRA, Jamie Rees, Emily Geddes, Holly Reid, Christie Duff and cox Alistair Frost, in the Women's J4+ couldn't quite complete the double, being beaten by the Irish into second place. Former ASRA crewmates, Iona Riley, Lucy Bonnamy, Catriona Bain and Jamie Steel (Aberdeen/Aberdeen University) also finished second in the WU23 4-; this is now Jamie's 10th consecutive HIR appearance - surely a record? The Men's U23 4- also featured some ex-junior crewmates, from ASRA and George Watson's College. The crew included World Junior Championships rowers Sean Dixon (Boston Uni, USA) and Callum McBrierty (Durham Uni), Henley medalist Murray Wilkojc (Newcastle Uni) and Nat Champs medalist Gary Wilson (Aberdeen BC) - the crew led from the start to win by almost 2 seconds from the English crew.
Scotland was the only country to field competitors in both the adaptive events. Caroline MacDonald (Tees RC) won her event over the Welsh sculler; Graeme Stewart (Loch Lomond RC) was unfortunate to race against a competitor in a different category. The "big boats" races at the end of the day as usual had plenty of action, with the quads and eights storming to the line. The best result from the Scots came in the women's eight, finishing second in a close fought race. Full results, including team points, from today's racing are available (word format).

Home International Regatta 2011: The timetable for Saturday's racing at Strathclyde Park has now been published, along with the Scotland senior and junior team lists, which include a large number of medalists from last weekends British Championships. The crews are currently training at Strathclyde Park and preparations are going well. Home support for this event is always welcome and everyone is welcome to come along on the day to cheer the crews on.
News from the U23 World Champs: From Lee Boucher:
Less than ten hundredths of a second came between Scots Gavin Murty and Andrew Holmes and an opening day victory in their respective heats at the World Under 23 Rowing Championships in Amsterdam on Thursday.
19-year-old Murty from Knightswood in Glasgow and his partner, Jamie Coombes of Hereford, were leading the field in today’s heat of the men’s lightweight double scull with only 250 metres to go. A burst from their Hungarian opponents coming up to the line was enough to progress them directly into Saturday’s semi-final by only eight hundredths of a second. Clydesdale athlete Murty, part of the Scottish Rowing Performance Programme supported by the sportscotland institute of sport, and Coombes will now race in Friday’s repechage at 11:24 (local time) where there are two places up for grabs in Saturday’s semi-final. They will face crews from Iraq, Russia, Portugal and Tunisia.
Lochwinnoch’s Andrew Holmes of Castle Semple Rowing Club, currently a student at Harvard University in Boston will have known quite a bit about one of his main rivals today in the men’s eight, the USA. The Americans stormed out of the blocks in the first 500 metres and were two seconds clear of the British crew, who were trailing in third behind Germany, last year’s World Champions. A strong middle section of the race saw the British boat, with 19-year-old Holmes in the 6-seat, come through the German crew and close in on the Americans. A sprint to the line resulted in a photo finish, but it was the USA, by seven hundredths of a second, that gained the automatic progression to Sunday’s final, leaving the GB crew to have to come through Friday’s repechage at 12:48. Friday will also see Edinburgh duo Karen Bennett and Katherine Douglas, and the British women’s eight, race for the first time as they race for lanes ahead of Sunday’s straight final.

U23 Blog: News from Gavin Murty at the World U23 Champs:
"On Monday morning we flew out to Amsterdam with the team from Heathrow airport with all our GB kit on which was good fun. When we arrived at the course on Monday evening it was slightly nerve racking eyeing up all our competition as we got a short paddle in to loosen off from the journey. Today (Tuesday) was a lot better, Jamie and I got 2 really good sessions done, with us already knowing the course from being at Holland Beker Regatta a few weeks ago we were able to relax a bit more and enjoy. We are looking forward to the days ahead and confident with some tough racing coming up."

GB Rowing Team News: Five Scots, including three-time Olympic silver medalist Katherine Grainger, were today announced in the GB Rowing Team to compete at the World Championships in Bled, Slovenia, from August 28 - September 4, 2011. Aberdeen’s Grainger and partner Anna Watkins are the defending World Champions in the double scull and were unbeaten in 2010 across three world cups.
Heather Stanning from Lossiemough and Helen Glover are named in the women’s coxless pair. Also in the women's squad, is Edinburgh’s Lindsey Maguire, in the squad for the Women's Eight.
There is a debut call-up for ex-GUBC and Clyde ARC member, Imogen Walsh, from Inverness, who gets a place in the women’s lightweight quad scull, and the British crew will be hoping to improve on last year’s fourth place finish. Imogen has enjoyed a successful season to date, with victory in the lightweight double scull at the Holland-Beker International Regatta last month.
2009 World Champion in the adaptive mixed coxed four David Smith, from Dunfermline, returns to the crew after a year away from the sport and he will be hoping to help his crew improve upon last year’s silver medal.

U23 Blog: News from Sean Leyland, Scottish Rowing Performance Development Coach at the World U23 Champs:
"Confirmed on Monday that our journey had taken another important step. Officially named to the 2011 GB U23 World Championships team. Gavin and Jamie have worked hard together over the past few months to give themselves more experience for a run at next years GB team. All the hard work they've put in has paid off and has put them in a position to represent GB next week in Amsterdam. We've raced in Amsterdam a few weeks ago and showed some promising speed there so we're quite excited to go back.
The residential camp we've been in with the whole team has been great. Rowing, eating and hanging out with all the other coaches and athletes can only help us prepare for Worlds. We've had competitive pieces against other boats which gave us an idea of where we stand and there's been plenty of support from other coaches and staff as well. Everything we could need to help us perform next week.
In addition to all the support from GB rowing while we've been here this wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the support from SportsScotland and Scottish Rowing. Special thanks to Jo Ramsey for all her help. With Jo being there, Gavin and I knew nothing would stand in our way.
More updates to come!"

Club/school links small grant programme: Scottish Rowing is pleased to announce the launch of a grant scheme to support the development of links between clubs and schools. Grants of up to £500 are available for 2011/12 to help clubs who want to initiate new, or expand existing activities with local schools. More information about the scheme and how to apply can be found on the new Scottish Rowing development page.
GB Under23 Rowing Team: A record four Scottish athletes have today been named by the GB Rowing Team to race at this year's World Under 23 Championships in Amsterdam. Clydesdale’s Gavin Murty, part of the Scottish Rowing Performance Programme supported by the sportscotland institute of sport, will race in the men’s lightweight double scull partnered by Hereford’s Jamie Coombes. Scottish Rowing’s Performance Development Coach, Sean Leyland, has been appointed by the GB Rowing Team as their coach for the Championships. 2009 world junior champion Andrew Holmes, from Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire, will sit in the seven seat of the men’s eight. The 19-year-old Harvard University student and former George Watson’s College pupil will be looking to improve on last year’s bronze medal that he picked up in the men’s coxed four.
Two Edinburgh oarswomen, Karen Bennett and Katherine Douglas, feature in the women’s eight. 22-year-old Bennett of Molesey Boat Club is a product of the GB Rowing Team ‘Start’ programme, a national talent identification and development scheme, progressing up the pathway following spells training at Heriot-Watt University and at Clydesdale ARC. Bennett sits in the seven seat in front of fellow Edinburgh athlete Douglas, 21, who took up the sport of rowing at Oxford Brookes University. Scottish Rowing’s High Performance Co-ordinator, Lee Boucher, said: “It is particularly encouraging to see such strong representation by Scottish athletes at this level. The World Under 23 Championships is a recognised ladder on the long term pathway to the Senior Olympic teams and our athletes and their coaches have worked extremely hard to get to this level. We wish them all the very best in Amsterdam and beyond.”

GB France Match: Report from Colin Wallace:
On Saturday at the GB v France J16 match held in a sunny, calm London Regatta Centre at the London Docklands both Scottish crews missed out to the French in very close races. Harry Leask (Clydesdale ARC) raced in the single scull and lost half a length off the start which he fought to hold the entire 1500m course. Harry finished only one length down which is very promising as he has another year at J16 next year. Lewis McCue and Elliot Bruce from ASRA were representing GB in the coxless pair. They led off the start to a much bigger French crew. Although they tried their best to fight off the French they powered through at the 750m mark. The boys held on and finished one length down.
Even though both crews lost GB won the match outright 7-6 with the boys winning 5-2 and the girls losing 4-2.
Henley Masters: Report from Ailie Ord at the Henley Masters Regatta
Eva Rankine from Loch Lomond won Vet E singles in a boat kindly lent to her by Mary-Ann Millar following her own boat being damaged. Ailie Ord of Strathclyde Park RC joined forced with Gill Prescott from Durham in Vet D 2x. This new combination raced yesterday in very strong wind to successfully get to the semis; they came up against Falcon, US champions and were beaten by 1 foot on the line (this crew went on to win easily in the final). Ailie also rowed in C8s with the Barnes Bridge Ladies and had a comfortable win in the final. These crews will all go on to compete at the World Masters in Poznan, Poland in September.
Gold for Grainger and Stanning at Lucerne World Cup: Report from Lee Boucher:
There were gold medals for Scots Katherine Grainger and Heather Stanning and a fourth place finish for Lindsey Maguire in another successful outing for the GB Rowing Team at the third and final Samsung World Rowing Cup of the season, in Lucerne, Switzerland. 2009 World Champions from Poland were amongst the rivals today for Aberdeen’s Grainger rowing with Anna Watkins in the women’s double scull. At the start the Great Britain duo were ahead and had taken a three-quarter length lead by the halfway point over Australia. The Australians came back towards the finish but the verdict went to GB by around two seconds. "We knew we would be up against it today. Lucerne is always the closest we get to World Championships standard racing and because of Anna's injury we didn't get our normal preparation", said Grainger. "The final was a fantastic tactical race and a great experience", she added."
Lossiemouth’s Heather Stanning rowing with Helen Glover stunned the World Champions from New Zealand to win in the women’s pair. The British crew led at the 500m and 1000m marks and by 1500m had over two seconds over the Kiwis who were beginning to fight back. By the grandstands the New Zealanders had the overlap on the British crew and their boat speed was clearly faster. The New Zealanders edged partially in front but the British showed their mettle, and hauled them back to win. "It was hard work but it was worth it", said Stanning of the gold medal performance. "We knew we had the speed so we just needed to get on with it".
The women's eight, stroked by Edinburgh’s Lindsey Maguire finished in fourth position behind the USA, Canada and the Netherlands.

Henley Royal Regatta Report: Report from Roy Sinclair:
In fine weather conditions last Sunday at Henley Royal Regatta, Inverness club oarsman Alan Sinclair, rowing for Leander Club, won the final of the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup for quadruple sculls crews by one length against a crew from The Tideway Scullers School.
On Thursday, a fine performance by Clydesdale ARC's junior quadruple sculls crew of brothers Jack and Harry Leask with Keiran Brown and Chris Yuile saw them overcoming a crew from Canottierri Sebino Lovere from Italy in the Fawley Challenge cup. In their quarter final on Friday, despite putting in a strong challenge all the way down the course they missed out on another win by 1¾ lengths to a crew from Malvern Preparatory School, USA.
Also on Thursday, Colin Wallace and Scott Purdie of Aberdeen Boat Club raced well in the Silver Goblets and Nickalls Challenge Cup for coxless pairs against the Australian Institute of Sport but despite taking an early lead were overtaken.
Other Scots racing in composite crews performed extremely well at Henley. Former pupils from George Watsons College, Murray Wilkojc and Sean Dixon, raced in the composite Newcastle University and Marino Billi, Italy crew which convincingly won it's quarter final of the Visitors Challenge Cup for coxless fours against a crew representing Leander Club but were subsequently beaten by one length in the semi-final by a composite crew representing National University of Ireland,Galway and Gráinne Mhaol Boat Club, Ireland. Another George Watson's FP, Michael Walker, raced in the Durham University eight which raced in the Temple Challenge Cup which narrowly lost out by 2/3rds of a length to the eight representing Harvard University, USA. Yet another George Watsons College FP Andy Holmes from Lochwinnoch and now studying in the USA was in the Harvard University eight which won their Ladies Challenge Plate race on Fridayn. In their semi-final, they lost out by the closest margin of 1/3rd of a length in an extremely close race agaisnt Leander Club.
Polly Swann and Lindsey Maguire from Edinburgh were members of the Leander Club and Gloucester Rowing Club composite crew which won their semi-final eights race in the Remenham Challenge Cup against another composite crew representing Oxford Brookes University and Molesey Boat Club and although putting up an excellent performance in the final, were unable to catch the USA national eight from Princeton Training Center. Another Scot competing in the Remenham Challenge Cup was Ellie Dorman who stroked the Vesta Rowing Club?s eight on Friday in an exciting race against a Leander Club/Reading University composite crew eventually losing out but just over one length at the finish. Recent member of Glasgow Rowing Club, Sam Scrimgeour, was a member of the composite crew representing Imperial College London and Tees Rowing Club racing in the Ladies Challenge Plate for eights which performed well on Friday in their tussle with a German eight from Berliner Ruderclub and Olympische Ruder Club Rostock but just failed to overcome their opposition who later went on to win this event.
Also competing at Henley were Gavin Murty of Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club and his Under 23 lightweight double sculls partner James Coombes from Hereford Rowing Club who narrowly beaten on Wednesday in the Double Sculls Challenge Cup, Karen Bennett also of Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club, racing as Oxford Brookes University/Moseley Boat Club in the Under 23 Women's eight who lost out by three lengths to the senior GB Squad in the semi-finals of the Remenham Challenge Cup on Saturday and Callum McBrierty, another George Watsons College FP now with Durham University, whose crew were beaten by just over one length in the semi-final of the Prince Albert Challenge Cup for coxed fours by Oxford Brooks University.
