Strong Start for Scots at World Champs: From Lee Boucher:
It has been an encouraging start for Scotland's rowers competing as part of the GB Rowing Team at the World Rowing Championships in Slovenia, with four out of the five GB crews with Scottish interest winning their opening heats. The final World Championships before next year's Olympics also doubles as qualification for London, providing an extra incentive to those competing. Qualifying directly to the A/B semi-final was Katherine Grainger in the women's double scull, Heather Stanning in the women's coxless pair and David Smith in the adaptive legs, trunk and arms mixed coxed four. The Great Britain lightweight women's quadruple scull, featuring Imogen Walsh, progressed straight through to Saturday's A final after winning their heat. Edinburgh's Lindsey Maguire and the British women's eight had to settle for a place in Wednesday's repechage after finishing second in their heat.

Further news of the Women's double scull can be found on Katherine Grainger's website - www.katherinegrainger.com.

Level 2 Coaching Course: Scottish Rowing will be running the next Level 2 Coaching Course on the 29th/30th October & 5th/6th November. In addition to the two weekends there will be an additional evening so that the child protection elements of the course can be completed. Due to the need to register with British Rowing and 1st4Sport (the cross sport accreditation organisation), it is important that anyone wishing to take part on the course completes an application form and forward the course fee to Jo Ramsay by 20th September . Each candidate will also need to sign up for ‘Row How’ on the British Rowing website in order to access the course resources - the cost of this is £10. You will be required to reference your Row How registration number on your application form.

The course fee for the course will be £405 (£289 of which is the course fee levied by British Rowing) and this should be sent along with your application to Jo Ramsay at the Scottish Rowing Centre, 366 Hamilton Road, Motherwell ML1 3ED. Candidates from Scottish Rowing clubs who complete the course will be eligible for a completion grant of at least £100 (exact amount to be confirmed). Candidates should also be aware that many local councils provide funding towards this qualification.

Scottish Representation at European University Rowing Championships: From Lee Boucher:
Great Britain has announced a strong squad to compete in the seventh European University Rowing Championships in Russia which starts this week. A team of 64 rowers and nine coaches will travel to the Krylatskoe Canoeing and Rowing Course in Moscow , with racing scheduled to start on Wednesday 31st August. The GBR Team is drawn from 10 universities including Glasgow University – with crew selection based on results from British Universities & Colleges Sport Rowing Championship events in 2010/11 – and is looking to retain the prestigious EUSA Salver, won in Amsterdam last year. Great Britain claimed the mantle of overall champions at the 2010 EURC with four gold medals, nine silvers, and six bronzes, and several members of those triumphant crews have been named in the 2011 squad.

Glasgow University’s Michael McNaul and Daniel Graham, Scotland’s senior men’s double scull from this year’s Home International Regatta, will represent Great Britain in the same boat class. Also competing in the men’s double scull is Alan Sinclair, from Belmaduthy in Ross-shire, who is representing the University of East London, whilst Ally Brooks of the University of Reading will race in the women’s pair and eight. Scottish Rowing looks forward to following the progress of Michael, Daniel, Alan and Ally and wishes them all the very best.

Lake Bled World Championships Blog: From Imogen Walsh:
Arrived in Bled the day before yesterday - despite the airlines efforts to tell me I didn't have a seat on the flight...! Anyway, all's well that ends well, and Bled is a pretty nice place to end the journey. That is to say, it's absolutely beautiful! The view from our balcony is amazing, the photo doesn't do it justice.

The lake is pretty busy with crews, but in many ways it's no different to any other regatta you'd go to, just that everyone is wearing national kit. Also, I don't normally go to an Ambassador's reception before racing, so that made a nice change last night, when the squad met with the UK ambassador to Slovenia.

The nerves started to set in the other day, when I realised that "next week" was only actually four days away, and that I can count the number of kilometres training we have before we sit on that start line for the first time (and it's not many). But having been on the course a number of times now I'm feeling calmer again, for the timebeing anyway...

Castle Semple Regatta Draw: The first draft of the draw for the rescheduled CSRC regatta is now available. Can you all please check the draw carefully and email captain@castlesemplerc.co.uk if you have any problems or queries as soon as possible. Any issues must be emailed by 9pm on Tuesday 23rd August to allow them to get the programme printed. Please note that for this regatta races are running every 7 1/2 minutes and the breaks will be 30 minutes long. There are also a large amount of doubles races running, where possible they have taken into consideration clubs boat usage.

World Championships Blog: From Lee Boucher
Imogen Walsh, from Inverness, formerly of Inverness RC, Glasgow University BC and Clyde ARC has been selected for the GB Rowing Team's women's lightweight quadruple scull which is set to compete at the upcoming World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia from 28 August to 4 September. Ahead of the start of the biggest race of her life, Imogen shares her thoughts with us as she blogs for the Scottish Rowing website:

"Training camp in Varese...tick! It's been good, and not just in the rowing sense. It's been a good chance to get to know the rest of the women's and lightweight squad better (the heavyweight men have been in Portugal for their pre-worlds camp), and for those of us who normally work as well as train, it's felt like a bit of a holiday! The chance to catch up on lost sleep and a few good books, and the odd gelato - the Italians love their ice-cream! Almost as much as the GB Rowing Team do...

And for anyone interested in an Italian training camp, I can highly recommend Varese. The course is beautiful, snow-capped Alps at one end rolling down to green hills all around the lake. The lake itself has two 2k buoyed courses, separated by about another 3k open water, so there's plenty room to spread out and get some coaching from the launch, without fear of swamping some other crew. It's been pretty hot, in the mid 30s, but surprisingly for someone more used to the Clyde, or more recently the Thames, I haven't found the heat too bad.

Leaving the tranquillity of Varese for Bled tomorrow morning; most national teams are already there or arriving around the same time. I'm looking forward to that feeling you get when you approach Strathclyde Park or Dorney etc - you see the other competitors, you know that everyone has been training hard all year, and that you're all here for one thing...

Everyone at Scottish Rowing wishes Imogen, as well as Katherine Grainger, Heather Stanning, Lindsey Maguire and David Smith the very best of luck.

Clyde Debris Important River Clyde safety message from the Glasgow Humane Society Lifeboat: After the heavy rain of the last week and the floodwater that came down river, debris has ended up on the piers of Kings, Polmadie, Rutherglen and Dalmarnock Bridges. GHS have already moved some of it, but until the current subsides we will not manage to remove the rest. If the water level is such that persons can boat before we have had a chance to remove this debris, great care will have to be taken, both passing these bridges and in case the debris has worked loose.

DUBC's boatman needs one or two broken sweep oars: Request from Great Uncle Bulgaria from Dundee UBC:
"I am building a sweep-rowing simulator hooked up to a Concept-2 flywheel. Despite our reputation for knackered equipment, DUBC don't have any broken oars that are suitable for this purpose and I am not going to cut up working blades. If anyone has one or two unusable/irreparable sweep oars which have been broken off outboard of where the collar sits in the oarlock (but still have intact handles, sleeves, and collars) I would be grateful if we could help declutter your boathouse! It would also be really handy if there are any similarly-broken sculling blade shafts out there. Any other obsolete or unused boat parts (particularly 1980s seat or footstretcher components) can also be made use of if they are taking up space and gathering dust. Thanks for any help you can give us!"

Please note that some of the composite crews are not correctly indentified (yet). This will be resolved in an updated draw that will be posted later this week. A circulation pattern that all competitors must adhere to is also available for download.
