Over 240 competitors - some from as far afield as Kent - contested the medals at Sunday's first SARA Open Indoor Rowing Championships - making it near certain that the event will become a firm fixture on the Scottish Rowing calendar. Technical facilities similar to those used at the British Indoor Rowing Championships were provided by Concept 2 - together with an exceptional technical team to set up and run the race computers. Event organiser Ronnie Goldie had recruited a team of SARA helpers including Callum MacDonald (Entries Secretary), John McKinney (Chief Scrutineer), Terry McNeill (Starter/Commentator), Katy Cameron (Results Data) and Michael Yeomans (Registration) - each of whom had other helping hands to assist. SARA President Mary Massaro presented the medals. The 15 ergometers were linked via computers to a big screen which allowed spectators to track the progress of each race. For anyone who hasn't attended an indoor rowing competition in this format, the atmosphere is electric and the noise from the crowd, especially during junior racing, absolutely deafening! The status of the event as a Scotland rowing team selection trial added spice to many of the races, with numerous competitors achieving lifetime best times. Huge thanks are due to the David Lloyd Centre at Renfrew for hosting the event. A truly superb facility.
