HIR registration froms: Anyone who is interested in competing at the Home International Regatta should complete a registration form and give it to Gary Bain this weekend at the latest. See the International page for the Scottish Selection Policy and registration form.
Gent Regatta: Gary Bain also asks anyone going to Gent and needing boats transported to come and see him this weekend.
Strathclyde Park upgrades: The new equipment at the Park and the new Regatta Administration system are having their first run this week. The start system at the 1000m has been upgraded to traffic lights and hooter, consistant with the 2000m start. Please make sure all your crews are aware of this change.
The starting sequence should be, if conditions are fair, "2 minutes call" (at which point the starter may start the race at any time within that 2 mins), a roll call, "Attention" - variable pause - red light - variable pause - green light and hooter simultaneously for "GO". Crews must wait for the Green light!!
If conditions are not favourable then it may be a "Quick Start". Here the Starter will omit the roll call and set off the race when all the crews appear to be ready and pointing down the course. It will simply be "Attention" - variable pause - red light - variable pause - green light and hooter simultaneously for "GO".

SPR draw: Final versions (excel, pdf).
Castle Semple Regatta: Details for the Castle Semple Regatta, 21 May, are now available.
Nithsdale Regatta date change: The Nithsdale Regatta will now take place over two days on 25 & 26 June. This year is Nithsdale ARC's 140th birthday and they are holding a special regatta and club dinner to celebrate.
News from the GUBC rowing camp, Germany: Last Saturday, Ruderverein Nurnberg celebrated the 125th anniversary of the founding of their club with an exhibition and meeting in the town hall, a sprint regatta for crews from Nuremberg and their twinned cities, and a dinner and party in their boathouse.
A party of 5 from GUBC (Iain Rice, Uli Kraeling, Chris Logan, Jonny Logan and cox Marrianne Flynn) were invited to attend as Glasgow is twinned with Nuremberg. The crew were shocked on arrival to discover that the 4+ they were to row in was in fact an open water coxed quad.
The racing was over 500m against crews from Nuremberg, Prague, Krakow, Venice and Nice. The Glasgow crew found the strange boat a bit awkward at first, but managed to edge a victory in their heat which put them into the final. A far better race in the final saw the crew edge a victory over the crew from Nice by just under quarter of a length. GUBC report that a good weekend was had by all!

SPR information: Covering letter for clubs.
Please note the changes to the course - this will the first event at which all 8 lanes of the extended course are used. The lane numbering has CHANGED, now running from lane 1 on the Motherwell (amusement park) side of the course of the course through to lane 8 the Hamilton (motorway) side.
There are the roadworks on the A80 north of Castlecary. May cause delays and there is a stretch of adverse road camber at the Glasgow end of the roadworks which should be approached with care if towing a trailer.
SPR boat hire: Clubs wishing to hire a boat from the NRA Boat Fleet should complete a boat hire application form and send it to Tom Hewitt by 6pm on Wednesday at the latest.
If you want to know whether to bring sun cream or thermals, have a look at the weather report for the weekend (the current forecast suggests bringing both might be wise!).

Scottish Rowing Awards Guest of Honour: Andrew Shannon, the former Robert Gordon University BC captain and Scottish Rowing international who is currently president of Cambridge University Boat Club, is to be the guest speaker at the Scottish Rowing Awards Dinner at the Alona Hotel, Strathclyde Park, on Saturday 23rd April.
Andrew was in the 5 seat of the CUBC winning Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race crew in 2004. This year – as CUBC president – he was unable to name himself in the ‘blue boat’, having to settle for a seat in Goldie. Although his blue boat lost this year’s race, Andrew can at least say that he has raced in two Goldie crews (2003, 2005) and one blue boat (2004) – and won on all three occasions.
Aside from the ‘closed’ world of university boat races, Andrew is a former National Champion of GB, Scottish Champion , Home Countries Champion, Scottish Oarsman of the Year, beaten finalist in the Visitors’ at Henley Royal Regatta (twice), and has numerous other distinctions.
|
|
| |
 |
Andrew also has the rare experience of captaining both a Scottish university boat club – where systems are voluntary and budgets sparse – and presiding over Cambridge University BC, where budgets run to several full time coaches, boatmen, physios and even psychologists. He hopes to entertain the Scottish Rowing community with some of the funnier moments from the ‘hot-house’ of the Boat Race, as well as sharing experiences and visions about opportunities in and for the sport.
Scottish Rowing president, Mary Massaro, says “Andrew is a high achiever in his own right and a great ambassador for Scottish Rowing. We are all delighted he has accepted our invitation to speak at the Scottish Rowing Awards. I’m certain he will draw an interested audience – including, I hope, from the university rowing community who I know sometimes feel the sport as a whole does not sufficiently recognise the vitality of the university sector.”
Tickets, priced at £35 (includes 3 course meal and a £5 contribution to Scotland’s HIR team 2005) are available from SARA Administrator, Jo Ramsay. |

Brisbane State High School visit to Scotland: The Brisbane State High School are coming to the UK to compete at Henley but are spending a week in Scotland prior to the Scottish Championships. Could any club in Glasgow/Edinburgh area put them up for the week. Nothing fancy just floor space needed but basic kitchen facilities would be good too (their party will number 20 to 25 individuals). They are also interested in training/racing alongside anyone who needs a bit of speed work before the Championships. They will be bringing a boys junior 8 & 4+ (16/17 years old) and they reckon their 8 will be about 5:50 pace for 2000m.
They are also looking to hire a boat trailer but there are no details on that yet. If anyone is interested or able to help can they contact Richard Watters in the first instance.
SARA Awards Dinner: Reminder that tickets are available from Jo Ramsay for the Rowing Awards Dinner at the Alona Hotel, Strathclyde Park on Saturday 23rd April. The ticket price is £35 and from this £5 from each ticket sale will go directly to supporting this year's Home International Team in Cardiff. The Alona is offering special accommodation rates for rowers - contact the hotel direct for details.
Gent Spring Regatta: George Watsons College and Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association travelled over to Belgium for the Ghent Spring Regatta last weekend. There were a number of good results there, including GWC finishing in 2nd place in MJ16 2x and 3rd place in MJ14 4x on Saturday and 3rd place in MJ16 4x on Sunday.
GB trial results: In the GB trials in Hazewinkel over the last few days, Scotland's Katherine Grainger has performed well, coming 4th in the time trial and winning the womens single sculls trial overall.
