Aberdeen Inter Company Row: The "Dog’s Rowlocks", a crew representing Nexen Petroleum UK Limited, romped home victorious over "X-On Factor" (Exxon Mobil) in the final of the Aberdeen Inter Company Row on Saturday. Forty crews participated in this annual event.
Bringing some of her Olympic sparkle to the occasion, Aberdeen’s own Katherine Grainger – silver medal wining oarswoman at both the Sydney and Athens Olympics – was on hand to present the awards. "I got some of my earliest rowing experiences in Aberdeen", said Katherine Grainger "in fact the Dee remains the only river I have ever fallen into while rowing! Still, it didn’t stop me going on to win Olympic medals, and I hope today will have been the start of something big in rowing for you, too."
This was the 21st staging of the Aberdeen Inter Company Row, and the second year in which the event has been sponsored by Sparrows Offshore. Adrian Bannister, chief financial officer of Sparrows Offshore, actually competed in the regatta. Speaking at the prize giving he said: "Aberdeen should be very proud not only to be home to Britain’s most successful oarswoman, Katherine Grainger, but also to Britain’s biggest community rowing event. Sparrows Offshore are delighted to sponsor and compete in the regatta, and we’re privileged to have been able to bring Katherine Grainger back home to present the prizes today."
Saturday’s event saw 40 crews compete in 76 races over a 500 metre course on the River Dee. The Inter Company Regatta is the largest event of its kind in Great Britain, is the centrepiece of Aberdeen Boat Club’s annual membership development plans, and makes a significant contribution to the amateur club’s funds.

Aberdeen Inter Company Row: Aberdeen Boat Club and their sponsors Sparrows Offshore have persuaded Katherine Grainger to present the prizes for the Aberdeen Inter Company Row this Saturday on the River Dee. This annual event, which stars 160 new rowers, plus 40 crew entry fees at £200 each, sponsorship, bar and barbecue income, does wonders for a club’s recruitment and funding!
Some other Scottish centres have suggested they might be interested in trying to repeat the formula on their local waters: any club reps who want to see the event in action are welcome on the day – speak to Bob Newton at ABC. Racing starts 12.30 pm on Saturday, final race 6.30, prize giving 6.40pm.
Scotland Elite Squads: Following the success of two of the Junior Elite Squad funded by SportScotland at Women's Henley Regatta (Stephanie MacDowell and Polly Swann of George Heriots School), Gavin Shaw (AUBC), a member of the Talented Athlete Programme also supported by SportScotland, has been selected to race at the Holland Beker Regatta, Amsterdam this weekend, in the Mens Lwt SeniorA 2x, with Ben Tipney of Leander Club.
Henley Veterans: The draw for the third of the Henley events is now on-line. Crews from all over Scotland are represented, from Dumfries, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Strathclyde Park.
