George Parsonage Glasgow Show: Several members of the rowing community joined with the Glasgow Humane Society at the Glasgow Show. The thousands of visitors to the event could thrill to the sight of racing fixed seat boats. In fact, Commonwealth officials visiting the Show were said to be impressed with the action on the river. All participants recieved a commemorative medal modelled on the Society's early awards for life saving.

The event also revealed what top international athletes do during the off season. The Strathclyde Park train (on loan to Glasgow Green) was driven by Academy Athlete and GB under-23, Gavin Shaw.

Scottish Coastal Team Scottish Squad at the Celtic Watergames: A small Scottish team travelled to Gijon in Asturias for the 11th Celtic watergames, rowing in the men's fixed 6 and the coastal four, with two women in a composite crew with the Brittany fixed 6 and our own 6.

The races were over 1000m with a 500m buoy turn (interesting in the four!), with the boats and lanes being drawn for each day. The weather was as to be expected so racing was from 10am till 2:30pm. The local countries had a distinct advantage in the 6 as it has its own unique style but this was balanced up with the 4.

The Scottish squad competed over 3 days in each event and the average over the three days made up the result. Going into day 3 we were even with the Northern Portuguese in the four for the gold and tied for third in the 6. After a great race in the 6 we were just pipped for the bronze and had to do it all again an hour later for the 4. The buoy turn was our downfall but we held off the Asturians to take the silver.

Jim Ford, team leader, says a big thank you to all the team for the great effort and helping make the whole games a success.

Cornwall is the venue for the 2006 games and SARA will be holding qualifiers in the New Year to take a full team of 20 to the games. 3 types of boats are being used from the Cornish gig to the new FISA approved coastal scull.

Please contact Jim Ford for more details and information in general for coastal rowing.

SARA Boat Fleet: All SARA boats and oars are currently being set to standard rigs for the FISA Masters Regatta. All clubs and individuals are reminded that no rigging adjustments are permitted to the boat fleet (oar & scull length, oar and scull inboard, rigging spans & rigging heights other than by supplied clip on/off washers). These rules have been relaxed in recent months but will now be strictly applied.

If required boats may be changed from their default rig (e.g. 290 is rigged as a 2x. It can be rigged as a 2-) but must be returned to their default rig at the end of your training session.
