SARA Coaching Conference: Two additional presentations have been added to this years conference.
Rebecca Caroe (Rowperfect) will be giving a presentation on the many tests that can be used on the Rowperfect to monitor training progress including power/strength and aerobic tests. This is likely to be on the Saturday lunch time slot.
Barry Crane (physiotherapist currently working with the Talent Identification athletes) will be discussing the latest research findings on the role of the supporting muscles in preventing lower back injuries. He will present his findings and then lead a practical session at the end of Saturday's lectures demonstrating easy ways to include the appropriate exercises into your training programmes.
All last minute applications should be sent to Jo Ramsay.
Schools Indoor Rowing Project: The SARA are looking for volunteers to help with the indoor rowing clubs being established at 29 Glasgow secondary schools. The project will be run by the Association and two part-time development coaches but volunteers are required to help once a week for one to two hours with the actual club activity at the school concerned. Each school has appointed a teacher to oversee activity at the school and each school club will established by the development coaches.
The programme of activity will include "ergo ladders" and interschool competition and events. However, with 29 schools, the development coaches cannot be at every school each week so rowing volunteers would be a great help. The objective is to have about 30 pupils taking part in the indoor rowing at club at each school. As the project develops we hope to be able to encourage links between rowing clubs and school indoor clubs. If you can help email Mary Massaro or Iain Somerside.

Coaching at Head Races: NOTICE TO ALL CLUBS.
At recent Heads coaching has again become an issue. At the Glasgow Fours Head one of the main contenders was disqualified for this reason and it also occurred at earlier Heads as well. While this has been brought to the attention of clubs on many previous occasions the message is still not getting through and the Umpires Commission consider it timely to issue a further reminder on this subject.
Coaching at Heads is regarded by Umpires as 'extraneous outside assistance' and therefore may render the crew liable to disqualification under F21. The subject has been articulated widely over a long period at AGMs, at briefings and in publications such as Rowing Action.
The definition of coaching can be a matter of debate and some Umpires may take a more lenient view of matters than others. Legitimate encouragement is acceptable but technical instruction or the transfer of race information is not. Because the dividing line can be blurred, coaches, and indeed supporters, should always err on the side of caution. For coaches to continue after being warned is inexcusable and will lead to certain disqualification.
| Acceptable calls will include: |
'Well done Glasgow University' or 'Come on Sandy' |
 |
| Unacceptable shouts will include: |
'Pull up the finishes' or 'Drive with the legs' or
'More length' or 'Timing' or
'Bladework 2 ' or 'You're now 10 secs ahead' or
'You're about to catch 2 crews' or 'Turn the bend now' |
Can all clubs please ensure that their coaches are advised to be very careful in calls to their crews while racing is in progress at Heads. Encouragement should be limited to shouts of encouragement and restrain themselves from going overboard in the heat of the race.
The one acceptable exception to this is, of course, the safety instruction to avoid a collision with an object, though the timing of a shout can be open to debate and even here should be the subject of careful thought.
You have been warned! Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control

National Championships Announcement: The Organising Committee of the National Rowing Championships of Great Britain are pleased to announce that the 2006 National Championships will take place at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell on 14th – 16th July. We are very grateful for the support of North Lanarkshire Council and Event Scotland, which means we can take this national event north of the border next year. We will offer at least the same range of events as in 2005, and plan to add a few new categories as well: further announcements will be made early in 2006.
Changes to Glasgow RC Fours Head events list: As a result of a change to the rules of racing at the recent SARA AGM, the event list has been modified slightly to accommodate Open Junior events. These events are open to all juniors, male or female, including mixed crews. Also, junior age qualification has changed and we are now offering JU14 quads instead of JU13 quads in division 2 to reflect this. The details on the web site have been changed to reflect this.
SARA Rules of Racing: The updated Rules of Racing are now available on the downloads page.
Next year's races: The 2006 events calendar is now also available (linked from the 2005 events page).

Junior Rule Changes: All clubs should be aware that the changes in the status rules affecting Juniors apply with immediate effect. Since the Stirling Head closed before the AGM, the rule changes will come into effect immediately after this event and will apply to the Inverness Head, Glasgow Fours Head and Clydesdale Scullers Head.
The changes can be summarised as follows:
- Any Junior can now cox a Junior crew.
- Junior women can compete in any Junior event but Junior men can only compete in open Junior events.
- The qualifying date for Juniors has been changed to the 1st September preceding the event rather than the calendar year preceding the event. This means that following the Stirling Head only those whose 18th birthday was after 1/9/05 can continue to compete as Juniors.
Tideway HORR: Following communication with the Secretary of the Tideway HORR, all Scottish clubs entering the Head of the River Race are advised to take care to read all the HORR instructions very carefully, particularly as they apply to treatment of SARA licence numbers.
Sales and Wants page: There has been a spate of fraudsters emailing those selling items on this page. Please be aware of this and do not reply to anyone wanting you to send money via Western Union.

Glasgow Fours Head: This year's Glasgow Rowing Club Fours Head will be held on 26th
November over 2 divisions of 5000m. Details can be found on the GRC web site, where there is also a downloadable/printable version.
SARA Coaching Conference: As well as the information, the application form for the coaching conference is now available. The application form and payment should be sent to Jo Ramsay at the NRA by the 17th November. (NB members of the Elite Coach Education Programme do not have to pay the conference fee.)
Feedback from last year’s conference showed there was a desire for SARA to provide accommodation so that discussion could continue into the evening. A deal has been made with the Express by Holiday Inn in Strathclyde Park that includes a Buffet Dinner, Bed and Continental Breakfast for £55. The Buffet Dinner requires 15 or more people booking accommodation. If there are less than 15 people requiring accommodation, Bed and Continental Breakfast can still be provided for £45.
Men In White: "Men in White", a new Channel 4 science entertainment series are looking for unique problems to solve - and they'd like to help some rowers. They have sent a flyer about the show. If you have a problem, however big or small, whether its a technical hitch related to the smooth running of the boat, a training improvement query, or something simple like how to get rowers of bed in the morning(!), contact the Men In White.
