The Henley Cull: there were tough times in qualifying for some of the Scottish crews. The Marlow/George Watson's composite is definitely through in Men's Quad. I can't trace the Castle Semple entry in the Double Scull. Sadly, Edinburgh Uni (Temple - but still unclear whether 1 crew was not required to qualify), Glasgow Uni (Temple), Glasgow Uni (Britannia), St Andrews Uni (Britannia), and George Watson's (Fawley) all went out in qualifying. Those not required to qualify (see 27 June below ) will obviously be on display come the regatta proper. Official details are on the Henley Royal Regatta site

The Scots at Henley Royal Regatta: here's a quick summary of the Scottish entries at Henley. Qualifying is tomorrow (Friday); the notes in brackets after crews mean: EQ- excused qualifying; NQ- not sufficient entries in event to require qualifying races; Q - must race in qualifying on Friday. The crews are: Temple Challenge Cup: Edinburgh University A, Edinburgh University B (only one EUBC crew shown in qualifying, so presume other is excused or has withdrawn?), Glasgow University (Q). The Wyfold Challenge Cup: Aberdeen Boat Club (EQ). Men’s Quadruple Scull: Marlow Rowing Club & George Watson’s College (Q). The Fawley Challenge Cup: George Watson’s College (Q). The Britannia Challenge Cup: Glasgow University (Q), St Andrews University (Q). The Silver Goblets and Nickalls’ Challenge Cup: M W Harris & P M Haining (London RC & Upper Thames RC) (NQ). The Double Sculls Challenge Cup: A M Watt & P X Murray (Castle Semple RC) (Q). Please note this information is the best available to me but is not guaranteed correct: for full official information on everything to do with the Regatta, consult their official web site.

Good luck to all those competing: could this be the year for that elusive first ever Henley win by a Scottish club?

Kids with big muscles? Three Clydesdale juniors decided to do a 10 hour sponsored ergo for club funds last Sunday. Rowing in shifts, Christine Kerr, Gary Carden and Mark Darroch were set an informal target of 80,000m by club mates, but actually covered 109,186 in the 10 hours, raising £300 in the process.

Coleraine AIBC of Northern Ireland were one of the farther-traveled visitors to the Dumfries Regatta this weekend.
Sadly, there are no Scottish club victories to report from Women's Henley. On the last day of the regatta, Glasgow University Ladies went out to Bristol University (2.5L) in College 8s in the quarter finals. Aberdeen BC were beaten by 1 length in the semi final of Club 8s by Auriol Kensington: AK were themselves beaten in the final by Thames RC (who had knocked out St Andrew BC in Saturday's quarter final).

Henley Royal Regatta approaches and the full list of entries and crews required to attend qualifying this friday are now on the regatta web site.

Meanwhile, north of the border: the experienced competitors were at Nithsdale ARC for the Dumfries Regatta, while Aberdeen BC hosted their annual Inter Company Regatta for 40 coxed fours, none of whom had sat in a boat until 4 weeks ago. Both events, thankfully, escaped the worst of the forecast weather. Results from Nithsdale when I get them: the Aberdeen event was won by the "Super Soakers" representing QCL International.

Between the Booms: at the close of racing on Saturday, 2 Scottish crews remain in contention at Henley Women's Regatta. In College 8s, Glasgow Uni Ladies bt Grand Valley State Uni (USA)(1.25L), while in Club 8s Aberdeen BC bt Furnival (4.33L) in their last races of the day en route to finals day.

Full results of Friday and Saturday's racing (and Sunday's as it come up) are on the Henley Women's Regatta web site

20 June (and before)

Women's Henley starts tomorrow (Friday) with a fine crop of Scottish entries (in club 8s, college 8s, college 4+, lwt 2x and 1x, and junior 4x that I have found). The full entry list (by event) and race timetable (by day) are now on the Women's Henley web site, where the results are due to come up daily or more frequently.

Rowers on Radio: you can listen on line to last Saturday's John Beattie's Sports Weekly, on which studio guests were Drew Hendry and Andrew Shannon (Aberdeen BC) talking about Scottish Championships, their hopes for Henley, the National Rowing Academy, etc. The listen again section is in the BBC Scotland part of the BBC web site.

18 June

Nithsdale Regatta draw for this weekend is now up: a 'tri-national' entry from England Scotland and Ireland, no less!
National Rowing Championships of Great Britain: the on line entry system for this year has now gone 'live'. Full information on the regatta, with rules, events, etc., and the on line entry system (postal system also available) are on the Championships web site. The Championships are at Nottingham on 19-21 July: entries close at 10.00 am on 9th July.
Correction: apologies to Clare Haley and Fiona Insch (Aberdeen BC), whose win in women's coxless pairs at the Championships I overlooked. Also it was Alexandra, not Castle Semple, who were the third club represented in the winning women's 'big boats'. It had been a long weekend!Scottish Rowing Championships & Scottish Schools Championships

15-16 June

Inverness RC had a successful Scottish Championships, taking 5 winners medals including this one in Men's Vet C 4+ (James McLardy, Iain Morton, Brian Bell, Tom Baker, cox Suzanne Hunter).
Results - Saturday and Sunday
The Scottish and Scottish Schools Rowing Championships at Strathclyde Park this weekend enjoyed good weather, which allowed some excellent racing. One 'attraction' was the return of Peter Haining, winner (with Martin Harris) of Men's 2- and (with Harris and 6 Aberdeen University students) of Men's 8. Another AUBC member, Gavin Shaw, was probably not too unhappy that Peter did not enter Lightweight Sculls, the event in which he won the World Championships 3 times in the 1990s: Shaw won. The Aberdeen BC 'heavies' (fortified by the hospitality of their sponsors, Specially Selected Scottish Pork, who had hired the marquee fro the day?) won men's coxed and coxless fours. Women's open sweep events were dominated by the Clydesdale/Castle Semple/St Andrew composites. Junior and Scottish Schools events found a welcome variety of homes to go to: good to see names like Johnstone High and Portobello High schools joining the more established junior winners like Heriots, Watson's and co. Full results from Saturday and Sunday are here.

Many thanks again to all who volunteered in whatever capacity to support the regatta: the entries and draw teams, catering and bar staff, stake boat teams, umpires, the regatta doctor, entries caravan staff, commentators - everybody. The Championships seemed to run smoothly.

14 June

The Regatta Volunteer Rota is now here: apologies for the delay - I spent half the day watching someone fit the towbar to the hire van I was to tow ABC's boats down with.
Scottish Rowing Championships. Competitors please note that a full boating slip system will be in operation at this year's Championships: crews must 'check in' at the yellow control caravan at least an hour before their first race. You will be asked to confirm at that time that the members of the crew which will row are the same as those on the entry form. If you are making substitutions before the first race in your event, you MUST ensure these are recorded on the boating slip when you check in: failure to do so is a disqualification offence under the rules of racing. Checks may be made by umpires at any time (e.g. as you boat for your race or as you return after your race).

When you get your regatta programme, check the circulation pattern. A Scottish club crew racing at a multi-lane regatta in England recently had their boat neatly ripped open from bow-ball to bow's rigger in a head-on collision caused by someone's failure to observe the circulation pattern there. False starts or disqualifications can be applied for breach of the circulation rules.

Don't forget to bring clothing for all weathers (this is Scotland!), to boat early and to stay within hailing distance of the starter once you arrive in the start area.

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help with stake boating We would still welcome more during the course of today (please note my request of yestarday (see below)for those who had previoulsy volnteered to send the form again): the rota will be on the web later today and in the caravan from tonight.

Good luck to all competitors; fingers crossed for a great Scottish Championships.
Rowers on radio: Drew Hendry and Andrew Shannon, two of Aberdeen's contenders for selection for the Commonwealth Rowing Championships, have been invited as studio guests on John Beattie's Sports Weekly, BBC Radio Scotland, 0900-1000 this Saturday morning.

13 June - unlucky for the webmaster

Please re-send your Regatta Volunteer form! Unfortunately a bug in my HTML has meant that none of your Regatta volunteer forms have been getting through. They haven't even been bouncing back from the server - so you would have had no way of knowing your messages were not getting through.

Could all those who submitted regatta volunteer forms for Scottish Championships please submit again: I promise this isn't a way of getting you on the rota twice. Honest!
Sincere apologies for the inconvenience

12 June

More Regatta Volunteers needed for Scottish Championships: many thanks to those who have already responded to the on-line volunteering scheme for stake boat people. Please remember that if lots of people volunteer to do just one 2-hour shift it will make all the difference to the smooth running of the regatta. If you want others to volunteer to be on the stake boat for your races, why not reciprocate by volunteering to be on a stake boat for them when you aren't racing?

Nithsdale Regatta: poster and events for the Nithsdale Regatta next weekend - the perfect antidote to all that stress from the Championships.

10 June

Scottish Rowing Championships and Scottish Schools Rowing Championships. The draw is now up (see left): a big entry with quality racing in prospect. Please do remember the need for competitors to volunteer to help the regatta in support roles when you're not racing: it was good to see folk right from young juniors to well-known internationalists volunteering at SPR, and if you help out in similar numbers at the Championships we should have a great, fully-staffed, event to enjoy.

More wins at the Met. The Aberdeen Elite Men's 4 repeated their Saturday performances on Sunday (1st in 4+, 3rd in 4-) while Gavin Shaw (Aberdeen University) won Elite Lightweight Men's 1x. Andy Buchan and Tom Hanna (Aberdeen University) won Elite Lightweight Men's 2- from Clyde's Douglas Murray and Henry Westwood (for a Scottish one-two), while an Aberdeen BC/Aberdeen University composite of Alison Aiken, Olivia Clarke, Kathryn Sommer and Fiona Hunter (cox Niki Dinsmore) won Women's S2 4+. There are also a creditable crop of 2nd and 3rd places listed in the full results on the Metropolitan Regatta site.

The Nithsdale W J16 4+ who won bronze at National Schools Regatta last weekend (from stroke) Alex Gemie, Anna Anderson, Rhona Davidson, Jennifer Ross and cox George McCall. The other Scottish medallists were Robert Norman and Gordon Stevenson (George Watson's College), silver medallists in M J16 2x and Annie Morrison (St Andrew BC), bronze medallist in W J16 1x.

2 June

National Schools Regatta is this weekend at Nottingham: unfortunately they are not putting up results until after the end of the regatta, but they will eventually come up here
Metropolitan Regatta at Dorney Lake has a healthy Scottish entry - and some excellent results for Scottish crews on the first day. Aberdeen BC won Men's Elite 4+, Aberdeen University 2nd in Men's S2 4+, Aberdeen BC 3rd in Men's Élite 4-, Aberdeen University (Shaw) 2nd in Men's Elite Lightweight 1x, Aberdeen BC/Aberdeen Uni BC 3rd in Women's S1 8. Some of the relative times (1500 m course only) in these races make very interesting reading for those studying form for later in the season: full results here

1 June

Champs entries pouring in: whilst I was working at the National Rowing Academy yesterday, the postie delivered a healthy pile of envelopes containing club entries for the Scottish Rowing Championships. Good to see people planning ahead in view of the holiday weekend postal arrangements. If you still have entries to post, choose your post office or post box carefully; the collection schedule seems patchy, with nothing at all on Monday or Tuesday.

Development Officer starts today: Callum MacDonald started work in his new role this morning at the National Rowing Academy.

Boathouse Fitness Club opens for business: the Boathouse Fitness Club at the National Rowing Academy opened to members this morning at 8.00am. First member through the door at a few minutes after 8.00 was Colin Gray of Wishaw; ahead of the opening, 154 paying members had already joined. Opening hours are Mon-Fri 0700-2200, Sat 0800-1900 and Sun 0800-2200. There has been a busy programme of technical inductions for members in the last week - a programme which continues in coming days. The Boathouse Fitness Club telephone number is 01698 250250.
