Edinburgh University Regatta: The draw for Saturday's regatta is now available.

National Schools Regatta: Crews from around Scotland will be racing at the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham this weekend. Racing starts on Friday morning and continues until Sunday evening in one of the biggest events of the year for junior rowers. The draw and results will be on the Nat Schools website.

Loch Lomond Byelaws: As of 21 May 2007, a new set of byelaws have come into force affecting water users on Loch Lomond. Known as Loch Lomond Byelaws 2006 they apply to the waters, shores and banks of Loch Lomond and its navigable rivers. As such they apply directly to Loch Lomond Rowing Club (LLRC) and will also apply to any rowers wishing to boat on the Loch. The byelaws may be viewed at www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/park/default.asp?p=298. Of particular note is the fact that the byelaws now require every person on a "personal watercraft" [i.e. a single scull] to wear a lifejacket at all times and that the "master of a boat" shall ensure that the boat is carrying sufficient lifejackets for the size and weight of each person on board.

Caledonian Canal Row: Alistair Neill's Rolls-Royce novice crew have completed their 60 mile challenge of rowing the length of the Caledonian Canal. On Friday, they rowed from Fort William through to Fort Augustus, with only a minor break where they had to put the boat onto the trailer for the final 3 miles of Loch Lochy having had to beach to empty the boat, and decided that it was too dangerous to continue even this short distance to the end of the loch.

Due to the very high winds on Saturday, Loch Ness was not rowable (25mph winds and swell up to 2ft high!), so the crew drove to Inverness and rowed 30 miles on the canal to complete the 60 mile distance. This would be a great achievement for any rower, but for a complete novice crew who first went onto the water less than eight weeks ago, it is amazing.

The crew undertook the event to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy - so far they have raised over £12,000. If anyone would like to make a donation then you can go to www.justgiving.com/4inarow. Alistair would also like to say thank you to all those who helped us with the event: SARA and Ian Somerside for the use of the boat and trailer, Glasgow RC and Stirling RC for training facilities, Edinburgh University for the loan of a cox-box and Inverness RC for their hospitality on Saturday. The deadline for the next edition of Rowing Action is looming fast, but Alistair hopes to be able to get a full account of the 'adventure' to Ailie Ord for inclusion.

World U23 Championships: The online ticket system for the World U23s being held this summer at Strathclyde Park is up and running on the website at www.u23-2007.com. There has been heavy demand for 4 day grandstand tickets and there are less than 500 grandstand tickets remaining. Priority will continue to be given to 4 day grandstand tickets. The organisers would urge all people wishing tickets for the covered grandstand to order now to avoid disappointment.

SPRC, winners of Mixed 2x Clydedsale Regatta Results: Clydesdale's 150th Regatta was a great day and the club was delighted to celebrate their anniversary with so many clubs from across Scotland, who came out in force to support us. There was exciting racing on the calm waters of the river, a roaring trade in homemade cakes and freshly barbequed burgers and wonderful music from the Johnstone Band. Those successful in winning one of the commemorative medals are listed in the results sheet. A full list of results and a gallery of photographs of the big day will follow on the Clydesdale ARC website soon. The organisers would like to give their thanks again to all those who put in so much effort to ensure a successful regatta.

EUBC stroke man is flipped into the river Edinburgh-Glasgow University Boat Race: A report from our local reporter on the banks of the Clyde:
The Walter Scott Edinburgh vs Glasgow Boat race on the Clyde went with a bang as the mens eights clashed repeatedly down the course, jockying for the racing line. At a crucial corner, neither cox blinked first - resulting in a crash that ejected an Edinburgh rower from his boat. Swimming for safety, he found himself hauled aboard the Glasgow boat. After angry words, a restart was arranged - but only after the sodden oarsman had dived into the water and swum back to his crew mates!

The Glasweigans crossed the line first before hearing on the tannoy that they had been disqualified. In a cruel twist of fate, it was actually Edinburgh the umpires had judged to be in the wrong, meaning the locals retained their title. Edinburgh had the consolation of winning the Womens race and both B Team events. Further pictures of the event are on the Clyde Gallery.

Clydesdale Regatta Photographs: Snapper Ron competed at (won!), umpired at, and was splendidly entertained at the Clydesdale 150th Anniversary regatta on Saturday 12th May. The EUBC/GUBC Boat Race also ran on the same day and a mixed bag of photos from both events is available on the images page of the Committee of the Dee website.

SPR Medals: Alistair Neill will be at Clydesdale Regatta on Saturday from around 4.00pm onwards to distribute SPR medals to the winners. Any winner who has not yet recieved their medal (there will be quite a lot) should look for him parked on the road near Clydesdale boathouse. As he is very unlikely to recognise most of the winners by sight, could you please bring your Racing Licences as proof of identity. If you can't make it in person, then Alistair will pass on the medals to a fellow crew member or an official of the club, again with proof of identity.

Clydesdale Regatta: The final draw and further information for competitors are now available. Please check the timetable as quite a few events have different start times. Competitors are requested to report to regatta control an hour before their first race.

TSG Barony Cup - Womens Graduate Crew TSG Barony Cup: The 2007 race took place on Saturday on the River Clyde. The event, sponsored by IT support company TSG, saw crews from Strathclyde University competing against alumni crews for the TSG Barony Cup. SUBC won the Men's Race and Laich O'Menteith (the alumni club) won the Women's race. The mixed race was a closely fought battle with the graduates coming through at the end. LoMBC therefore won by 2 races to 1 and are the winners of the TSG Barony Cup 2007. The organisers would like to thank TSG, the sponsors of the event, Alan Easson and Katy Cameron for umpiring duties, George Parsonage and Clydesdale ARC for the use of their boat. Photographs from the event can be seen on the Clyde Gallery.

As before, uncertainties regarding your status for future events should be resolved without delay with Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control, or through your club's licence contact.

Clydesdale Regatta: The provisional draw for the Clydesdale Regatta this Saturday is now available. It was a very difficult draw due to the unprecedented large entry and the organisers have done their best to accommodate clashes, however some competitors may find they have a short turnaround time between races, or a long time between heats and finals. The organisers therefore ask that all competitors help the regatta run smoothly by making sure they are at the start in plenty of time and by planning for quick boat changes. Further information for competitors will follow. The 150th Anniversary Regatta promises to be a great day and Clydesdale ARC are delighted that so many clubs from around Scotland will be joining them to celebrate the anniversary.

Cox-box Loan Needed: Alistair Neill is looking to borrow a cox-box for a few days in mid-May. He is coxing the Muscular Dystrophy charity crew (who raced for the first time at SPR) on their 'expedition' along the Caledonian Canal on the 18th/19th May, and is hoping to borrow a cox-box to save his voice on the journey! If anyone could spare a cox-box, Alistair would be looking to pick it up before Wednesday 16th and would return it after Monday 21st. He can be contacted at alistair.neill@btinternet.com or 07810 438592.

Edinburgh University WChamp4 Results from BUSA: No official results yet, but in the first day and a half of racing at BUSA Scottish crews made it through the rounds to several finals, including Championship finals in Mens and Womens 4+, Mens Lightweight 2x and Womens 2-.

Heriot Watt University ML2x Silver medals were won by Aberdeen University (McDowell) in Womens Junior 1x and by Edinburgh University in a sprint for the line, in Mens Junior 4+ . Bronze medals were won by Heriot Watt University in Mens Champs Lightweight 2x, Edinburgh University in Womens Champs 4+ and by Glasgow University (Buesher) in Womens Novice 1x. On Sunday morning, Glasgow University added the bronze medal in Mens Freshers 8. Conditions on Saturday were relatively benign, with only a mild head wind to contend with. Sunday proved to be a different story, with a strong head wind resulting in at least one mid-race capsize, one crew managing to visit all the lanes (including lanes 0 and 7) and kit stall owners spending most of their time securing their stands!

Clydesdale Regatta: A reminder that the deadline for entries to the Clydesdale Regatta is Thursday 3rd May at 7pm

Regatta Qualifying Wins: As a consequence of difficulties at SPR not all licence cards were punched as appropriate following qualifying wins. A list of all competitors whose status could be affected by results at SPR and the earlier St Andrew Regatta is now available. Particular reference should be made to the notes at the end of the list and any uncertainties regarding your new status for future events should be resolved without delay with Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control, or through your club's licence contact.
