HWUBC V EUBC Varsity Match: Heriot Watt University and The University of Edinburgh took indoor rowing outside as rowing made its debut in the annual multi-sports varsity match between the universities. It formed the highlight of a day of sport between the universities, with teams of 4 racing over 2000m on a single ergometer and a crowd of almost two hundred spectators at the Peffermill Sport Complex cheering them on. Edinburgh were looking to secure a whitewash after their Rugby, Hockey and Football teams were all victorious and they got off to a perfect start with their mixed freshers' team winning in a nail-biting encounter coming in 0.6s ahead of their rivals. Heriot Watt however responded by winning both the senior men's and senior women's events to take the overall victory and add it to their 2008 Scottish Universities Indoor Rowing Championships Victor Ludorum title.

Clydedsale medal winners at BIRC: Three Clydesdale athletes returned as medal winners from the British Indoor Rowing Championships in Birmingham on Sunday, a first for a Scottish club at this event. Craig Colquhoun improved on last year's performance to take bronze in the Men's J18 event against a tough field. Later in the day, Karen Bennett and Aileen Stirling won Silver and Bronze respectively in the Women's Open event. Aileen led the field for much of the way only to be overtaken in the second half by training partner Karen and eventual winner, Worcester based Jo Lyons retaining the title she won last year. Also taking place last weekend were the first of this year's GB Trials, with a number of Scottish born and Scottish based athletes taking part. Full results are available on the ARA website.

River Clyde Safety Notice: Following the heavy rain last week a large hazard of debris formed on the north pillar of the Polmadie footbridge. This hazard has now moved and completely blocks the north arch of this bridge. All boats travelling upstream should take care and use the centre arch remembering that boats coming downsteam have right of way. It would help if boats travelling downstream would use the south arch in the meantime. Having already moved once it is likely that the hazard will move again so all craft should take care.
Notes to all competitors and coaches: Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control would once again remind competitors and coaches that, with the Head season upon us, coaching crews during Head races is NOT permitted and offenders may face disqualification. At the recent Scullers Head some coaches testing this rule were observed and the risk is not worth it as it is the crew which suffers the penalty. Competitors entering events are also reminded that under the Rules of Racing they require a licence number at the time of making their entry, not when they race. INDICATING A LICENCE IS IN PROCESS OF APPLICATION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Failure to provide a licence number when ENTERING may render the competitor liable to purchasing a Day Ticket.

Around 60 young people from S1 to S5 have rowed 2 minutes on the ergo to see who can get the furthest, with a view to getting them into rowing. Most entertainment, however, was had at morning assembly where teachers raced each other over 500m in front of a vocal crowd! SABC Development Officer, Niall Darroch, would like to thank Jim Ferguson of George Watson's College for loan of the ergos. Any Edinburgh Schools interested in becoming involved with Junior Rowing should contact nialldarroch@hotmail.com.
