News from the Glasgow Humane Society: Having recently had a Janousek coxed four holed on the piles on the south bank upstream of Rutherglen Bridge, the Glasgow Humane Society ask that all persons using the river make themselves aware of the Rules and Guidelines and of the maps supplied to each Clubhouse by the Society. The cox in this case was out coxing for the first time and had never been shown the Rules and Guidelines Booklet nor any map.

Please also note that work will be commencing on the riverbank to remove trees. While every care will be taken to ensure that no trees enter the water, one has to allow for "vandals" throwing some branches etc into the river after working hours. Please be ultra carefull.

Update to GB Trials posting: The trials have been cancelled due to severe weather warnings for the south-east of England.

Scottish Rowers Brave The Weather At GB Trials: Report from Lee Boucher.
Scotland’s top rowers are facing up to the prospect of sub-zero temperatures on Saturday when they compete at the GB Rowing Senior Team Winter Assessment in Boston, Lincolnshire. Eighteen Scottish athletes, including seven currently based in clubs and universities in England, are taking part in the long distance trial over the 5km course, as they strive towards selection for London 2012.

Leading the way is four times world champion and triple Olympic silver medallist, Aberdeen’s Katherine Grainger MBE, representing St Andrew Boat Club in the women’s single scull. Fresh from her successes in the summer, when she claimed a silver medal at the world championships in Poland in her debut season in the single scull, Katherine will be hoping to continue that good form into the current season. In the men’s coxless pair, 2009 junior world champion Andrew Holmes will be looking to make a smooth transition into the senior rowing world, when he teams up with Constantine Louloudis of Eton College, crewmate from their gold medal winning boat. The 18 year old Lochwinnoch youngster will face tough opposition in a division which features Olympic gold medallists Andrew Triggs Hodge and Peter Reed.

Six members of the Glasgow based GB Rowing Team Start Programme, coached by Ross Malone, venture south including Christopher Rae and Ross Irvine in the men’s single scull and Karen Bennett, Claire McKeown, Samantha Fowler and Rosie Young in the women’s single scull. Strathclyde Park’s Kelly Limond is hoping for a repeat of her result from the previous trial in October, when she won the women’s lightweight single scull division. The 29 year old physical education teacher from Glasgow faces 2009 world champion Sophie Hosking (born in Edinburgh) for the first time.

Training partners from Glasgow Rowing Club, students Sam Scrimgeour (Strathclyde University) and Iain Docwra (Heriot-Watt University) trial in the men’s lightweight single scull for athletes under 75kg. Both athletes are aspiring towards British selection for the world under 23 championships and will be looking to build on their strong performances from the October assessment, where they finished 9th and 10th respectively. Racing starts at 10:30am for the open weight boats and 13:30 for the lightweight classes.

National Rowing Academy becomes Scottish Rowing Centre: It was agreed at the December Board Meeting of Scottish Rowing to re-brand the National Rowing Academy as the ‘Scottish Rowing Centre’. This decision was taken to better support the marketing of the facility, which will be providing an income to Scottish Rowing in the next financial year. Following lots of recent good publicity and very favourable reviews in the press, the Scottish Rowing Centre is attracting plenty of interest for its sessional, day-long and weekend camps that make full use of all the training, conditioning, indoor and outdoor facilities. Discounted rates are available for Scottish Rowing member clubs.

Glasgow Fours Head Photos: Pictures from Glasgow Head 2009 are now up on David Nolan's flickr page and hi-res versions are available to anyone who wants them.

Level 2 Coaching Course: Scottish Rowing will be running a Level 2 coaching course at the National Rowing Academy on the 13th/14th & 20th/21st of March 2010 for all interested parties. There will also be an additional afternoon, date to be confirmed, to complete the child protection & first aid elements of the course. Due to the need to register with the British Rowing and 1st4Sport (the cross sport accreditation organisation) it is important that anyone wishing to take part on the course completes an application form and forwards the course fee before the deadline of Monday 1st February. Each candidate will also need to sign up for ‘Row How’ on the British Rowing website in order to access the course resources - the cost of this is £10. You will be required to reference your Row How registration number on your application form. The course fee of £350 (£258 of which is the course fee levied by British Rowing) should be sent along with your application to Jo Ramsay at the National Rowing Academy, 366 Hamilton Road, Motherwell ML1 3ED.

Sessional Coaches Required: There has been a sudden increase in the number of schools taking part in the Glasgow Schools Indoor Rowing Programme and as a result we require some additional sessional coaches. The purpose of this role is to deliver a 1 hour indoor rowing session for High School pupils within the Glasgow area. You will be provided with a coaching programme and paid £12 for each session you deliver. For more information on the above role, please contact Geraldine Best on gerry.best@scottish-rowing.org.uk or John Blair at the Scottish Rowing Centre on 01698 250250
