Monday proved an excellent day at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida for Edinburgh University Boat Club’s Gavin Horsburgh, Maddie Arlett and alumni, Robyn Hart-Winks.

Competing in the lightweight men’s quad (LM4x) Horsburgh (Edinburgh Univ. BC/Lochwinnoch), Peter Chambers (Oxford Brookes Univ. BC/Coleraine), Ed Fisher (Leander Club/Nottingham) and Zak Lee-Green (Agecroft/Cardiff) secured second place for Great Britain in their heat and will move through to Thursday’s semi-finals.

The women’s lightweight quadruple scull (LW4x) quartet of Arlett (Edinburgh Univ. BC/Selkirk), Hart-Winks (Univ. of London BC/Kirriemuir), Eleanor Piggott (Wallingford RC/Bedford) and Gemma Hall (Wallingford RC/Wargrave) secured GB’s third A final spot of the week, finishing second behind Canada. The quad join the men’s coxed pair (M2+) and the women’s quad (W4x) who booked their final places on Monday.

Angus Groom (Leander Club/Glasgow) and Graeme Thomas (Agecroft RC/Preston), competing together in their first international race for over a year, sat in second for much of their heat before overhauling the Italian crew of Filippo Mondelli and Luca Rambaldi in the final 500m to move into the semi-finals.

Melissa Wilson (Cambridge Univ. Women's BC/Edinburgh) and Holly Hill (Cambridge Univ. Women's BC/Gossington), racing together in the pair (W2-) for the first time at a senior regatta, finished behind New Zealand in their heat and will enter the repechage.

Rowan McKellar (Broxbourne RC/Glasgow) makes the repechage in the women’s four (W4-) with Caragh McMurtry (Coalporters ARC/Southampton), Rebecca Girling (Molesey BC/Fareham), and Sam Courty (Univ. of Bath/Alnwick) who finished their heat in fifth.
