Clydesdale Scullers Head Results: Results from the Singles and Doubles races at Saturday's Clydesdale Scullers Head are now available.

3 October

Clydesdale Scullers Head: The final draw for Saturday's head is now available.

GB Triallists: Lee Boucher will be around Clydesdale ARC on Saturday during the Heads should any GB triallists wish to discuss their plans for the upcoming season.

St Andrew/Edinburgh University Head of the Forth: A reminder that entries for the Head of the Forth on 11th October close on Sunday afternoon. Further information is available on the events and results page.

Boroughmuir Indoor Rowing: Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh have been doing a weeks worth of DryStart as part of the Junior Rowing Programme at St Andrew BC. Around 60 young people from S1 to S5 have rowed 2 minutes on the ergo to see who can get the furthest, with a view to getting them into rowing. Most entertainment, however, was had at morning assembly where teachers raced each other over 500m in front of a vocal crowd! SABC Development Officer, Niall Darroch, would like to thank Jim Ferguson of George Watson's College for loan of the ergos. Any Edinburgh Schools interested in becoming involved with Junior Rowing should contact nialldarroch@hotmail.com.

Clydesdale Scullers Head: The provisional draw for the Clydesdale Scullers Head events on Saturday 4th October is now available.

John Stevenson: It is with sadness that Roy Sinclair sends news that the Inverness Rowing Club Honorary President John Stevenson passed away on Thursday 25th September in Highview Nursing Home. John was a long standing and loyal supporter of the club since it was formed 20 years ago and was the donator of a single scull and the very impressive Southwell Stevenson Single Sculling Trophy which is competed for annually for club members.

John was an impressive oarsman in his early years and was a member of the Clare College Boat Club and rowed in the No 4 seat of the Eight which won the Ladies Challenge Plate at Henley Royal Regatta in 1939. His oar was proudly displayed on the wall of his house in Edinburgh Road in Inverness. John had not enjoyed the best of health over the past few years and Roy last visited him at home some 3 weeks ago and spent a most pleasant half hour in his company. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

International Rowing Update: The SARA Performance Group are currently putting together a new Performance Plan for 2008-2012. As a result of this, a decision was made to cancel the October Trial for both HIR triallists and also GB traillists. Scottish based athletes looking to trial for GB Teams in 2009 should instead travel to Boston as per the instructions on the GB Rowing website.

A sub committee of the Performance Group have been tasked with reviewing the selection policy for HIR 2009 and beyond. It is intended that a discussion paper will be produced and brought to the SARA AGM in November. Anyone wishing to provide comments on the policy should direct them to Graeme Cunningham, SARA Team Manager, graeme.cunningham@scottish-rowing.org.uk

Any Scottish GB triallist wishing to be considered for support in 2008/09 should contact Lee Boucher, High Performance Co-Ordinator, for an informal discussion on their plans for the season, prior to the Boston trial. Either email - lee.boucher@scottish-rowing.org.uk or mobile 07818 077612. Lee will be at the Clydesdale Scullers Head on Saturday 4th October to discuss elements of the new Performance Plan, including what funding will be available to athletes. A meeting time and place will be confirmed next week.

Clyde ARC are pleased to announce that financial recognition (albeit small) of the coaches' time and commitment has been agreed at Committee level, in addition to consideration given to travelling expenses dependent on the coaches travel requirements for training and race occasions. Interested parties are invited to contact Caitie Gorton-Phillips on 07921 004438 or to send note of their interest (and a summary of experience where appropriate) to Flat 2/1, 372 Langside Road, Glasgow, G42 8XR.

The ages shown on the licence cards may therefore now be 1 year out and coaches should check that they have entered the correct Junior category by checking the age directly from the date of birth.

Hazel Smith and Ailie Ord with their medals FISA Masters Friday update: On Day 2 of the FISA World Masters Regatta in Lithuania, glorious hot conditions and a gentle tailwind still produced no smiles on Scottish faces until mid-afternoon when a composite womens C8+ featuring Hazel Smith of Inverness RC and Ailie Ord of Strathclyde Park RC won their heat. The photograph (right) is not digitally enhanced and the medals really are that big!

Richard Mathieson of Aberdeen Boat Club came second in his heat and the Snapper kept up Deeside Scullers tradition by coming 5th. He also blamed tired legs from Gary Bain’s stag night. Apologies to any other Scottish competitors who may have been missed. This will be the last interim report from this highly enjoyable event as Snapper Ron will be out of email contact for the next few days. He will then be busy publishing information for the Aberdeen Sprint Regatta on his return to the UK (and there is still time to get your entries in for Aberdeen).

Clydesdale Scullers Head: Details for the Clydesdale Scullers Head on the 4th October - poster and entry information.

St Andrew and Edinburgh University Head of the Forth: A new event for 2008 - St Andrew BC and Edinburgh University BC are jointly holding the Head of the Forth, which will be hosted at Stirling Rowing Club on Saturday 11th October. Initial information is now available.

GB Composite Women's Eight FISA World Masters: Snapper Ron has provided an early report from the FISA World Masters regatta in Takai, Lithuania.
A small and select Scottish squad is enjoying the spectacular surroundings of this massive water park. Through gaps in reeds we have seen yachts and Canadian canoes crossing the interconnected lakes that make up the region. Fortunately, there is so much water available that the chances of any of the sports colliding seems remote (although the Snapper was almost wiped out in practice tody by an English 2X which was racing down the wrong side of the training circulation pattern - pesky foreigners!).

Peter Morrison Inspects Wednesday turned into a very sociable afternoon/evening that recreated memories of (in)famous 'Henley Wednesdays' of recent years. Peter Morrison is managing to run the whole FISA show despite complaining that his legs are still sore from the 5-a-side football tournament at Gary Bain's stag do last weekend.

Snapper Ron in practice The photographs show:
(top) a multi-composite GB Womens Eight (nearer camera) approaching the finish in front of Trakai Castle. Ailie Ord (SPRC) and Hazel Smith (Inverness RC) are at 7 and 6
(middle) Snapper Ron practicing in the heat at Trakai
(bottom) Peter Morrison inspects the course (and finds it beautiful!)

GUBC in Croatia Glasgow University Boat Club competes in Croatia: Following Glasgow University Boat Club's success at the British Universities Championships this year, GUBC were invited to represent Great Britain at the 4th European Universities Rowing Regatta in Zagreb, Croatia. In the blue ribbon men's eights event, Glasgow University finished a respectable 8th place facing stiff opposition from national eights of Croatia and Poland (which included athletes recently participating at the Beijing Olympics).

Prior to the competition the squad spent a week with their twinned club Canottieri Sebino Lovere, on the shores of Lago d'Iseo, Italy. The crew enjoyed excellent training conditions as well as superb hospitality, especially from former GUBC rower Aristide Bonomelli.

Photographs and Aberdeen Sprint: Snapper Ron has posted pictures from the Inverness Sprint on the Committee of the Dee website. Also posted on the same site are entry details for the Aberdeen Sprint on 13th September. Entries close on 7th September.

St Andrew BC Garden Party: St Andrew BC are hosting a garden party on Sunday 14 September, which will include a celebration of George Hunter OBE's life-long contribution to the club and to Scottish Rowing. Tickets are available from Iain Wilson.

Million Metre Challenge: On 1st October 2008 Queen Anne High School in Dunfermline is organising a Million Metre Challenge and asking all their pupils to participate as well as staff and as many parents/guests as possible. In addition to 16 machines, Concept 2 have loaned the school 40 more machines to make a grand total of 56 machines. The purpose of this is to raise money for both school funds and Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) and to try to enthuse young people about the benefits of taking exercise. They are hoping to build on the excitement of Beijing. The whole programme entails each pupil/staff member/parent/guest rowing for just 5 minutes and being sponsored for 1p per metre. With around 2000 participants they should reach our goal of one million metres in the day(!) thus raising around £10,000 equally split between the school and CHAS. The school is of course seeking sponsorships and any "celebrities" to come along to help our cause. Further information is available.

2009 Regatta Calendar: Sandy Walker, Convenor of Racing Control, would like to remind all clubs that applications for 2009 dates are required to be in his hands by 1st September. This date is necessary to allow a draft calendar to be prepared in time to go out with the AGM papers.

Boston Marathon - Boat Transport Needed: A Stirling RC double would like to row in the Boston Marathon this September, and are in need of some assistance to get their boat there. If anyone from the Central Belt, or travelling from the north via the Stirling area, has space and could help, please contact Liliane McGeoch.

GB Olympic Results: At the Beijing Olympic Regatta today, the GB women's quad, stroked by Scot Katherine Grainger, finished in the silver medal position after a hard fought race against the Chinese quad, repeating the result of the Sydney Olympics 8 years ago. In total, GB won 6 medals - gold in the M4- and MLwt 2x, silver in the W4x and M8, and bronze in the M2x and W2x.
