Good coaches are always looking to expand their knowledge and keep up to date with current thinking.
There are various generic and rowing specific development opportunities available to coaches. Scottish Rowing runs periodic workshops for coaches on a variety of topics. Details of upcoming workshops will be posted on this page when available.
We have pulled together the information for courses run by a number of different local authorities. To see details of a particular course please click on the name of the course. We will update this calendar regularly.

Performance Coach Development
Coaches are the backbone of the rowing community in Scotland and Scottish Rowing is committed to recruiting and retaining the best professional coaches in our programmes as well as supporting, motivating and upskilling the volunteer coaching network.
Over the next year Scottish Rowing will be looking to launch a targeted and bespoke performance coach development programme to support our leading and emerging coaches working with athletes on the performance pathway.
Other performance coach development initiatives planned include:
- A series of national performance coach workshops to discuss and debate key themes relating to performance rowing and to facilitate the sharing of best practice.
- A mentor programme aimed at connecting the professional university coaches with emerging volunteer coaches in programmes across Scotland.
This year Scottish Rowing approved a new policy to underwrite the cost of the Scotland Rowing Team coaches attending the Home International Regatta to recognise the importance of high quality coaching within our performance system. This is the same approach that will be taken in 2018 and coaches will be appointed by the Scottish Rowing High Performance Group.
Coaches are strongly encouraged to attend athlete development camps organised by Scottish Rowing to support their learning and personal development. There will be no charge for coaches attending these camps provided that they have completed the new coach registration process.
For the 2017/18 season Scottish Rowing is introducing a new Coach Registration process for all coaches wishing to receive direct communications regarding the Scottish Rowing Performance Programme.
Coach Registration will also be mandatory for any coach wishing to participate in any Scottish Rowing Performance Programme activities including the Junior Development Programme and the Scotland Rowing Team. This allows us to better support the coaching workforce across Scotland as well as helping us to safeguard the participants in our sport.
To register as a coach with the Scottish Rowing Performance Programme for 2017/18 season please email Carol Ann Ellis, Scottish Rowing Administrator (firstname.lastname@example.org) by 31st October 2017 with the following information:
- Your Scottish Rowing Membership Number;
- Confirmation of whether you are a member of the PVG Scheme through Scottish Rowing (junior coaches only);
- Evidence of attendance at a Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop within the past 3 years; and
- Evidence of completion of the UK Anti-Doping Accredited Advisors course (free online).
For support regarding any aspect of the Coach Registration process or to arrange to complete a PVG check through Scottish Rowing please phone 01698 250 206.
