Scottish Rowing are delighted to announce the appointment of Iain Rice as the new Workforce Development Manager. Iain takes over this role from Andy Barton, who has been the Pathways Manager since March.
Iain began his rowing career at Methodist College Belfast as a school pupil, competing at the various events in Ireland and Great Britain. Iain represented Ireland and Northern Ireland at the World Commonwealth Rowing Regatta. From there, Iain went on to row at Glasgow University and Glasgow Rowing Club.
Iain began his coaching career at Glasgow University Boat Club, leaving to pursue a career in teaching and returning to coaching again in 2012 as the Henley Stewards Coach based at Strathclyde Park and St Andrew Boat Club. In 2014, Iain became Director of Rowing at the University of St Andrews where he coached for 5 years, moving on to study and coach at University Rowing Aberdeen with Lewis McCue.
Talking about his new role, Iain said “I am excited to be joining the team at Scottish Rowing, to support clubs, coaches, and volunteers in delivering rowing to their communities. Having had the experience of being an athlete, a coach, and a volunteer myself I look forward to working with these different groups in the Scottish rowing community.
Iain has coached athletes at various stages of the pathway from beginner, junior and senior level. At the University of St Andrew BC, Iain played a foundational role in developing the club’s performance culture, built a volunteer coaching team and supported the student committee to deliver rowing to the club and run the Saints Sprint regatta. He also helped run an indoor schools' program at Madras College.
As the Workforce Development Manager, Iain will be responsible for the implementation of Scottish Rowing's workforce development plan, which aims to recruit and retain more coaches, umpires and volunteers within Scottish Rowing.
Andy Barton, Scottish Rowing Pathways Development Manager said ”I am thrilled to be working with Iain in the Pathways Team at Scottish Rowing. He was the outstanding candidate through our recruitment process and has already had a positive impact in his short time working for Scottish Rowing. I am looking forward to continuing to work with Iain as we look to support and grow our workforce across Scottish Rowing.”
Iain is now working full-time and available to be contacted at iain.rice@scottish-rowing.org.uk or at +44712047386.
