This weekend, Strathclyde Park will once again play host to Scotland’s premier rowing event as the 2025 Scottish Rowing Championships return on 7–8 June. With strong entry numbers across all boat classes and a packed programme of racing, the stage is set for one of the most exciting championships in recent years.

A total of 664 competitors will race across the weekend, representing clubs from across Scotland and beyond. Entries are up 8% on last year, marking the largest championship entry in at least five years, with over 700 crews expected to take to the water across the two days. Women and girls make up the majority of the entry, accounting for 52% of all competitors.

There’s also been remarkable growth in the Masters category, with entries nearly doubling since 2022, reflecting the inclusive and lifelong appeal of rowing. The Championships continue to draw athletes of all ages and levels, from juniors racing in their first season to seasoned competitors chasing national titles and international selection.

This year’s event also boasts record entries from 15 clubs across England, adding to the strength and depth of the competition. International flavour will be provided by three Irish clubs - Athlone Boat Club, Carlow Rowing Club and Lee Valley Rowing Club - as well as Orlando City Boat Club from Florida, USA, entered in the Open J14 1x – a first for the event and a sign of its growing international reach.

Jen Thomson, Chair of the Scottish Rowing Championships Organising Committee, shared her excitement ahead of the event:

“I am always excited to welcome back our Scottish Rowing members, but I am particularly thrilled to see so many visiting clubs join us at Strathclyde Park for the Scottish Rowing Championships. With the largest entry in at least 5 years and more than 700 crews taking part, we are expecting some fierce competition this weekend. This competition crowns our Scottish Champions but is also used to select those who will go on to compete for their country later this summer; it is a wonderful opportunity to see the sport at its best. I wish everyone the best of luck.”

The Championships, delivered with the support of North Lanarkshire Council, will showcase Scotland’s top talent, from rising stars in the junior categories to performance pathway athletes aiming for selection to represent Scotland and Great Britain on the international stage.

Among the many exciting races on the schedule, the Open and Women’s single sculls and coxless pairs events are expected to deliver some of the most fiercely contested racing of the weekend. These categories will see athletes vying for selection to the Scotland Rowing Team for the upcoming 2025 Home International Rowing Regatta, going head-to-head with international representation on the line and for the winners the opportunity to get their hands on a number of historic and newly introduced trophies including the Jo Pinder Trophy and the Amanda Cobb Trophy.

As part of Saturday’s programme, Scottish Rowing will host a special boat naming ceremony to officially name the newest addition to the performance pathway fleet – a new Filippi coxed four.  This investment, supported by sportscotland, enables Scottish Rowing to continue to support aspiring athletes in our performance pathway and we warmly invite competitors, coaches, spectators and officials to join us for the ceremony.  Listen out for announcements from the commentary team, who will confirm the exact timing and location on the day.

In preparation for the Championships and other Scottish regattas, Scottish Rowing—working closely with our dedicated umpire team—has developed a new set of video resources to help competitors better understand race procedures, safety, and rules. These are available now on the Scottish Rowing YouTube channel and are a valuable tool for athletes and coaches alike.

As we celebrate the sport and its athletes this weekend, the event also coincides with #VolunteersWeek and #UKCoachingWeek — a fitting reminder that events like these are only possible thanks to the dedication of volunteers, coaches, officials, and club organisers across the country. Scottish Rowing extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who gives their time to make our sport happen, both on and off the water. #PassItOn
