Lindsay Flockhart has been a dedicated coach at St Andrew Boat Club for over 10 years, playing a significant role in supporting and developing rowers across different stages of the sport.

He first became involved in because of his children; with no prior knowledge of rowing he initially helped to support the junior section. From those early beginnings, Lindsay’s contribution continued to grow, and he later moved on to coach the senior women’s squad, where his commitment, knowledge and ability to bring out the best in athletes really shone.

Since taking on the role, Lindsay has helped more than 10 crews qualify for Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta, an impressive reflection of the consistency and ambition he has helped foster within the squad. Most recently, two of Lindsay’s athletes brought home Henley Women’s trophies in the Championship Single Sculls and PR3 Single Sculls, adding another memorable chapter to an already outstanding coaching record.

The senior women’s squad has also enjoyed sustained success at the Women’s Eights Head of the River, winning five pennants in nine years. That level of achievement speaks not only to the talent and determination of the athletes, but also to the positive training environment and long-term belief Lindsay has helped create.

We spoke to some athletes who have been positively impacted by Lindsay’s coaching over the years, asking how Lindsay brings fun and play into the sport and how he, as a coach, has impacted them.

“I'd say his willingness to be the butt of the joke is a good example - e.g. the monkey games, a whole annual day of fun races that stemmed from the way he say "1k" - which sounds a lot like monkey!”
- St Andrew BC Athlete

“There’s a long standing joke that if we (senior women) win something big then he has to get a tattoo for it…He remains tattoo-less so far. We used it as motivation as one of the calls in the 8+ last season!”
- Becky, St Andrew BC Athlete

“Lindsay has played a massive part in my rowing journey supporting me and adapting to the needs I have without hesitation. A truly inspiring coach to whom coaches aspire to be. His mantra in making rowing accessible for all”
 - Sam,St Andrew BC Athlete

Lindsay also continues to play an important role in the development of aspiring junior rowers across Scotland through his work as a volunteer Junior Development Coach, which he started in 2019, for the Scottish Rowing Junior Academy and Scottish Argonauts , helping to guide the next generation as they take their first steps towards higher levels of performance.

Lindsay has been recognised for his hard work and dedication twice at the Scottish Rowing Awards, he first won the Community Coach of the Year in 2017-2018 followed by the Club Coach of the Year in 2022-23.

“It’s been a real pleasure to watch Lindsay’s journey into and through coaching. He’s someone who consistently puts others first, gives his time freely, and just gets on with it. He’s been a big part of building what you now see at St Andrew Boat Club - a group that performs at a high level but genuinely wants to be there. Alongside that, he continues to support the next generation through Scottish Rowing’s junior development programmes, which is a big part of who he is as a coach. Lindsay’s a huge asset to the sport in Scotland, and someone others can learn a lot from.” - Lee Boucher, CEO, Scottish Rowing
“Lindsays coaching influence in the SABC Women’s squad has provided an attractive space for rowers to stay in the sport, while simultaneously driving ambition on the national stage. His dedication goes even further as he continues to volunteer his time to Scottish Rowing’s Junior programmes where he supports ambitious young athletes to be the best that they can and most importantly, continue to fall in love with the sport. The time, energy and passion he puts into the sport is not only infectious to the rowers, but to the coaches as well. I’m still not sure I believe the rumours that he has a full-time job on the side!” - Tom Young, Head of Performance, Scottish Rowing

On behalf of everyone who has benefited from his coaching, support and encouragement over the years, we would like to thank Lindsay for the time, energy and passion he continues to give to rowing. His commitment has made a lasting difference to athletes, coaches and clubs across Scotland, and his contribution to the sport is hugely appreciated.
