Altogether ten members of the Scottish Rowing community will be involved in the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Linz Ottensheim, Austria, which get underway on Sunday.

The five Scottish female athletes in the British team are:

• 2016 Olympic silver medallist Karen Bennett from Edinburgh, who will be in the British eight, along with Glasgow’s Rowan McKellar
• Edinburgh University student Polly Swann, who makes a return to the international scene as an Olympic silver medallist from 2016
• Edinburgh’s Melissa Wilson, who races in the quadruple sculls category
• Edinburgh University’s lightweight single sculler Maddie Arlett from Selkirk.

The three male athletes are:

• Glaswegian Angus Groom, the current Commonwealth single sculls champion, who races in the quadruple sculls crew
• Sholto Carnegie, who is in the coxless four
• Edinburgh’s Harry Leask, who travels as spare man for the heavyweight team.

Also involved are Edinburgh’s Hamish Burrell, who is coach to both the men’s lightweight single and double scullers, while umpire Mike Haggerty from Glasgow will be a member of the Jury.

As well as having titles and medals up for grabs, these Championships will represent the first and primary opportunity to qualify boats for next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.  This has no doubt played a part in attracting nearly 1200 athletes from a record 80 nations, including the biggest number of para-rowers ever at a World Rowing Championships.
