Scotland's Polly Swann won a gold medal in the women’s pair rowing with Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover at the World Rowing Cup at Eton Dorney this weekend. It was a great regatta for the Scots with Sam Scrimgeour (LM2-) picking up gold as well as Alan Sinclair (M4-) and Imogen Walsh (LW2x) getting silver. The first Glasgow Schools Rowing Championships for over 30 years was held on the Clyde over a 500 metre course last Saturday. Ten schools took part in six events with championships being won by five different schools. In the invitation eights event guests Albyn School beat Glasgow Schools by half a length.

Snapper Ron's plan for 2013 is to beat Willie Brown in the Mens Vet 1x at Scottish Champs. Unfortunately, the only thing that is foiling this plan is the disturbance of his training programmes due to having to spend time processing photographs.

The Scottish Rowing performance team are running a sculling camp on the 10th/11th August at the Scottish Rowing Centre. The camp is open to J16+ athletes who have experience of racing in a single. This is a new camp aimed at supporting the development of our most promising athletes, with a focus on keeping them training throughout the summer months.

Glasgow Academy would like to congratulate all Scottish medallists at the National Schools Regatta and celebrate their own success in winning their first ever medal at the event, a silver in WJ14 doubles scull. The combination of India Somerside and Becky Nielson lost Gold by 3 secs to St Neots Rowing Club.

With Katherine Grainger, Heather Stanning and a number of other Olympic Champions missing as they contemplate their futures, a new look GB Rowing Team produced a performance at the opening 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup in Sydney, Australia, which bodes well for the future of the sport on the road to Rio 2016. Three Scots who didn't feature at London 2012 stepped up to the mark and recorded some impressive results as part of a strong British team performance which delivered four golds, a silver and two bronzes from 14 crews.

At the Gent Spring International Regatta on the 13th and 14th April, crews from the Aberdeen Schools Rowing Association won 6 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals over the two days of the competition.

Inverness' Imogen Walsh won today's GB Rowing Team trial, justifying her pre-event tag as favourite in the lightweight women's category, to set the mood for the Scottish contingent at the Redgrave-Pinsent Rowing Lake in Caversham, Reading. The 29-year-old, a world champion in 2011 in the lightweight women's quad scull, was an emphatic winner after building a strong lead through the middle of the race, finishing ahead of Ruth Walczak and early challenger Eleanor Piggott.

Three Scots are racing at the World Rowing Cup in Sydney from 22nd-24th March. Polly Swann (George Heriots School RC/Edinburgh University BC) will race in the Women's pair and eight. Alan Sinclair (Inverness RC/Aberdeen BC) will race in the Men's coxless four. Imogen Walsh (Inverness RC/Glasgow University BC/Clyde ARC) has been selected for the Women's lightweight double scull, having won her event at the February GB Trials.
Robert Gordon University and the University of Aberdeen have appointed a full-time professional High Performance Rowing Coach to nurture and support the next generation of rowing talent for Scotland and Great Britain. Supported by Scottish Rowing and sportscotland, the Aberdeen Head of Performance Rowing will be responsible for leading on the day-to-day coaching and training programme with a focus on identifying and developing talented athletes to an Under 23 international standard. 34-year-old Michael Hughes arrives in Aberdeen following a hugely successful 3 years coaching at Newcastle University, one of the leading rowing programmes in the country, where he had specific responsibility for recruitment and talent development.
