Sixty athletes from 16 clubs will represent the Scotland Rowing Team on Saturday at the 54th edition of the Home International Rowing (HIR) Regatta, the annual match between the four home nations which this year is being hosted by England at the London Docklands Regatta Centre.
The event will run for the first time since 2019 after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 regattas. As a result, 49 athletes (82% of the team) will be making their debuts for the Scotland Rowing Team including all 30 junior athletes in the team.
Of the returning athletes, Aberdeen Boat Club’s Catriona Bain (W4+) boasts the most experience having competed at the HIR Regatta on six previous occasions, winning gold in 2008 (JW4-), 2010 (JW4-) and 2013 (W4-).
Several of the junior team won medals at the recent British Rowing Junior Championships including Izzy Clements (JW2x) and athletes from Scotland’s JW4- (ASRA), JW4+ (Glasgow Academy / George Watson’s College) and JM4+ (ASRA).
St Andrew Boat Club in Edinburgh have the largest representation in the team with 10 athletes across junior and senior teams and Club Captain Lindsay Flockhart the lead coach for the junior men’s team.
Graeme Cunningham, Scotland Rowing Team Manager, added: “It is great to have the Home International Rowing Regatta back in the competition calendar for the first time since 2019. The regatta is a key performance pathway event for our athletes and coaching team and unites our community.”
“We look forward to renewing our exciting rivalries with England, Ireland and Wales on the water in this unique team-based competition where every race counts.”
The event has seen recent Scottish Olympians such as Karen Bennett, Rio 2016 silver medallist, and Alan Sinclair competing and winning for Scotland before becoming full-time GB Rowing Team athletes.
The Scotland Rowing Team this year has an experienced support staff which includes 8 coaches across the junior and senior teams, including coaches from several Scottish Rowing supported performance programmes.
Racing at the London Docklands Regatta Centre gets underway at 9.00am.
