Six Scottish university clubs travelled down to Newcastle upon Tyne last Saturday to race at this season’s instalment of the BUCS Head. Sadly, an unpleasant weather forecast meant that the second day of racing had already been cancelled before the event had even begun, however, with some quick planning the organisers managed to move a small number of events onto the Saturday schedule.
Edinburgh University Boat Club picked up no less than seven medals over the weekend, including a bronze in both the Men’s and Women’s Championship eights event, a silver in the Men’s Championship coxless fours, and two gold medals. Their first gold came from their debutant beginner women’s squad, who at their first ever race, won the Women’s Beginner Eights ahead of the likes of Surrey & Queens. Their second gold medal cam from the Men’s second eight, who won the Men’s Intermediate eights in a tightly fought event against river residents Durham & Newcastle.
The University of St Andrews Boat Club won the only other Scottish gold medal of weekend, which also happened to be the clubs first Championship BUCS medal in almost 10 years! The Women’s Championship coxed four finished third in their field to win the Bronze medal behind competitors from Durham and Imperial College.
In the Victor Ludorum, Edinburgh University finished third in the Overall and Women’s categories, and fourth in the Men’s category. The University of St Andrews and Glasgow University both also finished on the overall leaderboard, finishing in twelfth and fourteenth, respectively.
Of the remaining Scottish Institutions, Glasgow University Boat Club had 6 crews race down the Tyne waters, Strathclyde University Boat Club and Dundee University Boat Club each had three crews, and finally, Heriot-Watt University Boat Club took two.
Many of these clubs will now turn their attentions primarily to the eights, as with many of our other Scottish Clubs, as they look to compete at the Tideway Heads over the next month, before we make the move into regatta season once again!
