Meet the new Glasgow University Boat Club Head Coach, Patrick (Paddy) Hudson

We took the opportunity to catch up with Paddy Hudson, Glasgow University Boat Club's new Head Coach, as he gets started in his new role.

What caught your eye when the Head Coach post at Glasgow University Boat Club came up?
There’s a great history and tradition with rowing at Glasgow of which I was already aware.  More recently I watched the girls’ crews race at Henley Women’s last year and was impressed.  It feels like a Club that has a good amount of headroom for further development, and the basics in place to facilitate that development.

Upping our game to become more attractive to new members and investors

Like it or not funding in sport is a changing world.   Such is the pull on resources today that sports clubs and governing bodies need to make a stronger case than ever for why others should consider investing in them.  

To explain how we can adapt to make our clubs more attractive to potential funders, Linda MacDonald from Scotland’s largest independent trust, The Robertson Trust, will be joining us at our Changing the Future weekend at the sportscotland Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre, Largs (20-21 January 2018).

Scottish Rowing Calendar – updated to include Regattas including Sprint events for 2017-18 season

Scottish Rowing has confirmed competition dates for the remainder of the 2017-18 season. This includes the main season regattas, including sprint events, along with a couple of late additions to the head race calendar.

New Rowing Programme Lead and Head Coach appointed to University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow Sport is delighted to welcome Patrick Hudson as Rowing Programme Lead and Head Coach of Glasgow University Boat Club.

The 29-year-old had been Assistant Coach at Imperial College Boat Club, a GB Rowing Team High Performance Programme and the club where Hudson began his own rowing career in 2008 as a fresher before progressing to Captain, then eventually moving into coaching.

How to coach well in a club environment with a large number of athletes

Ask any club coach for the challenges they face and the list is likely to include coaching well in a club environment with a large number of athletes.
 
To support our coaches in this very area we have invited Steve Gunn to lead a workshop during Scottish Rowing’s “Changing the Future” event at the sportscotland Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre, Largs (20-21 January 2018).

GoMembership Implementation

Scottish Rowing is moving to a new membership system, GoMembership. We are starting the transition on Thursday the 14th December and will be suspending access to the current rowing.ismysport system at midday. The new system will then go live early next week (week beginning 18th Dec)

Svend Elkjaer on board for Changing the Future Event (20/21 January 2018)

“If you want to be a successful rowing club then you have to be more than a rowing club,” says Svend Elkjaer, Director of Sports Marketing Network, who will lead workshops at our Changing the Future event at the sportscotland Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre, Largs (20-21 January 2018).

“Grow Your Club's Income” and “Leadership and Management of Your Club” will be Svend’s two subjects, although both are inextricably linked.

Strathclyde Country Park Water Access - 19th January until further notice

North Lanarkshire Council have advised that they will be lowering the loch at Strathclyde Country Park on 19th December to carry out essential maintenance to various loch structures, including repairs to the sluice gates and rowing jetty clamps.

Changing the Future Weekend

The Scottish Rowing's 'Changing the Future' weekend is taking place on the 20th and 21st January at the sportscotland National Sports Training Centre in Largs.

As well as two days of keynote talks and workshops, there will be dinner in the evening celebrating rowing in Scotland and which will include the presentation of the Scottish Rowing Annual Awards. This will be followed by a ceilidh.

Newcomers George Watson’s win a growing Scottish Rowing Schools Indoor League

Edinburgh’s George Watson’s College won the Scottish Rowing Schools Indoor League on their first time of entering, carrying away the shield from the grand finale Schools Indoor Championships last week at Ravenscraig.
