The West Boathouse on Glasgow Green Celebrates Grand Reopening

Posted: 16 May 2023

The West Boathouse on Glasgow Green celebrated its grand reopening on Sunday 14th May.

Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the two year restoration project completed in December 2022, securing a riverside landmark in the heart of Glasgow Green for future generations.

“Up the watter” opening Event

Over 250 people joined Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, Tokyo Olympic Silver Medallist Harry Leask and representatives from funders, project partners, volunteers and the rowing community to officially re-open the West boathouse. A flotilla of boats carried a specially commissioned flag down the River Clyde where is was raised to commemorate its re-opening 118 years after it first opened its doors. A packed day of events along the Clyde from the Cunnigar Loop to Glasgow Green included crafting activities, walks, talks, tours, rowing demonstrations, music and an appearance from Clota, The ancient and venerable River Goddess of the Clyde.

Jo Pinder 1972-2023

Posted: 2 May, 2023

We are sad to announce the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Jo Pinder. Jo was a highly valued and loved member of our team, who made an undeniable impact in our sport.

Despite never having stepped in a rowing boat (and being adamant that she never would!), Jo was a key figure at Castle Semple Rowing Club, serving in various leadership roles over the years, and she was always to be found hard at work in the race control tent at their Regatta.

In her role for Scottish Rowing, Jo was responsible for managing the Scottish Rowing membership system, the racing points system and supporting clubs on event management entry systems. She was a key contributor to the Scottish Rowing Schools League and Indoor Championships each year, and a pivotal volunteer at the Scottish Rowing Spring Regatta and Scottish Championships keeping a firm hand on the tiller of Race Control from the finish tower.

If you have ever taken out a Scottish Rowing membership or taken part in a competition in rowing over the last decade or so in Scotland, then you will without doubt have benefited from Jo's hard work, diligence and knowledge.

But more than this, Jo was a wonderful person with a wicked sense of humour and huge heart. We will miss her terribly, but are grateful to have known her and to be lucky enough to call her our friend.  Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time. RIP Jo.

There will be a celebration of Jo’s life at the Clyde Coast & Garnock Crematorium at 3pm on Monday the 15th May.   Her family have suggested that instead of flowers, people might like to make a donation to St Vincents Hospice who provided to support to them when it needed most.

Her family has also asked that those attending wear a bit of their favourite team/sports clothing or if not sport inclined then something else they love and have a passion for - ideally one shared with Jo such as dogs, sci-fi, sport or computer games.

If anyone has any photographs of Jo they would like to share with us, please email them to caroline.parker@scottish-rowing.org.uk

New Scottish Rowing Performance Boats Named at Spring Regatta

Posted: 29 April 2023

The Scottish Rowing Spring Regatta and Scottish Student Rowing Championships took place at Strathclyde Country Park last weekend in traditionally un-springlike conditions, with a large entry from clubs across the UK.  Competitors welcomed a return to a more conventional racing format and enjoyed a full schedule of competition across both days.

Windy conditions on Saturday - while not up to the worst Strathclyde Park can produce - proved challenging for some competitors.  Sunday was colder but calmer – better for rowers than spectators - and the Big Bobble Hat stall did a roaring trade.  We were also pleased to welcome RivalKit, our performance kit partner, back to the event.

Adding to the sense of occasion was a surprise visit from Dame Katherine Grainger DBE on Saturday to take part in ceremony to name four new Scottish Rowing performance boats.  Purchased with support from sportscotland, the new Filippi racing boats will ensure Scottish Rowing athletes on the performance pathway have access to world class equipment for trialing and racing.
