British Rowing opens new World Class Start centre in Strathclyde

British Rowing and Scottish Rowing have joined forces to uncover the next generation of Olympic rowing champions.

British Rowing’s World Class Start programme is opening a new centre at Strathclyde Park Rowing Club in April aimed at bringing high potential Scottish youngsters into the Olympic programme.

Specifically, the Start programme is targeting females 5’10 and taller aged between 14-22 years old, and males 6’2 and taller aged between 14-20, who are not already rowing, although existing rowers can still apply to be part of the programme.

SEARCH IS ON TO FIND ARMY OF VOLUNTEERS TO BE THE FACE OF THE GLASGOW 2018 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The search is on to find more than 3,000 volunteers who will be the welcoming face of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships – an exciting new multi-sport event that brings together some of the continent’s leading sports.

Applications officially opened this morning with volunteers set to play an essential role in the experience offered to athletes, officials, media and spectators as they visit Glasgow and Scotland next year. Volunteers will support a wide range of functions from Spectator Services and Accreditation, to Transport and Media and much more.

Beginners to Olympic Champions set for Head of the River Race

Fourteen eights representing Scottish Rowing clubs will take to the Tideway this weekend to compete on the 4 ¼ mile Thames Championships Course from Mortlake to Putney.  Olympic and world champions to complete beginners will be amongst the 363 crews taking part in this historic event which signifies the end of the winter racing season for many athletes.

Glasgow 2018 - 500 Days to Go

Today marks 500 days to go until Glasgow hosts the first ever European Championships from 2 – 12 August 2018.

An 11 day celebration of sport, with 12 venues, 6 sports and around 3,000 athletes – Glasgow 2018 will be a must watch, must attend event which elevates the status of European Champions. Spectators can expect thrilling sporting action throughout the city with Glasgow hosting Aquatics, Cycling, Golf, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon.

The European Championships will be much more than 11 days of sport, with the sports programme sitting alongside Festival 2018. The vibrant Festival 2018 programme will encompass theatre, dance, music, digital, comedy and visual arts performances, and help showcase the very best of Scottish and Glaswegian culture. Celebrations at landmarks such as George Square and Merchant City will allow everybody to be part of the European Championships.

We're Recruiting - Head of Performance Pathway

Scottish Rowing is seeking to appoint an experienced and self-motivated individual to fill the new and exciting role of Head of Performance Pathway, responsible for developing a strong and sustainable performance pathway within Scotland as an integral part of the British system.

Scottish Rowing has established an innovative performance network with successful university based partnerships in place. The Head of Performance Pathway will be responsible to the Chief Operating Officer and accountable to the Board of Scottish Rowing. The successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of the performance elements of the Scottish Rowing strategic plan which aims to produce more Scottish athletes competing for the GB Rowing Team at all levels.

The Head of Performance Pathway will be responsible for developing a sustainable structure to ensure Scottish Rowing meets its performance outcomes each Olympiad. Specifically, to produce home based Scottish rowers capable of transitioning through the GB Rowing Team Under 23 Championships and on to the GB senior team.

Scottish rowers shine on the Tideway

Scottish rowers shone as the 77th Women’s Head of the River Race, the largest of its kind in the world, took place on Saturday from Mortlake to Putney in London.  Beginners to Olympic medallists featured amongst the 296 women’s eights that took to the start line on the Tideway looking to make waves and set down a marker for the season ahead.

Scottish rowers set for 77th Women’s Head of the River Race

Following International Women’s Day earlier this week the rowing world demonstrates the strength in depth of the female side of the sport this weekend with over 2,500 women taking to the Tideway for the 77th Women’s Head of the River from Mortlake to Putney.

Scottish Rowing is well represented amongst the 321 eights taking to the start line with 14 crews from clubs and universities having travelled to London from North of the Border.

European Championships Glasgow 2018 - Media Release

Sports fans can look forward to cheering on Europe’s finest rowers at Strathclyde Loch next year after a Host City Agreement was formally signed between Glasgow 2018 and the World Rowing Federation, FISA.

Great Britain’s Rio 2016 heroes are amongst those likely to take to Scottish waters as part of the first ever European Championships, a new multi-sport format which will take place in partnership between the host cities of Glasgow and Berlin.

Millennials to Medals

The golden summers of 2012 and 2016 are still etched firmly in the minds of UK rowing and Olympic sports fans.  Who could forget those heady days when GB’s rowers topped the world?

In the sometimes gritty but often rewarding engine rooms of rowing development, though, Rio is already a distant memory and the charge is on to find and continue to nurture the next generation.
